The fastest way to go invisible to AI shopping assistants is a sloppy product feed. These nine mistakes are the ones I see most on Shopify stores, and each one quietly keeps ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews from recommending you. Fix them and you give the machine something to work with.
Here's the bottom line. AI can only recommend what it can read. Your feed is the read.
1. Missing GTINs
No GTIN, and the assistant can't confirm the product is real or match it across sources. Google's product data spec treats unique identifiers as core. Add them before anything else.
2. Titles written for you, not the shopper
An internal SKU name like "ACME-BLK-WIDE-01" tells an AI nothing. Shoppers ask for "wide-fit black waterproof boots." Write titles the way people actually ask.
3. Empty or thin descriptions
A one-line description gives the assistant no attributes to match. Write 40 to 200 words of plain, specific detail per product. That density is what gets quoted.
4. No product attributes
Color, size, material, fit, use case. If those fields are blank, you can't match a filtered query. The shopper's question carries the filters. Your feed has to answer them.
5. Wrong or missing category
A bad Google product category drops you out of the right comparison set entirely. Map every product to the correct category so you show up where the agent is actually looking.
6. Stale inventory status
An agent won't recommend a product it thinks is out of stock. If your availability field lags real inventory, you lose recommendations you earned. Keep it synced.
7. No images or broken image links
Missing image URLs signal an incomplete, low-trust listing. Assistants favor complete records. Make sure every product has a working, high-quality image link in the feed.
8. Prices that don't match your store
When feed price and site price disagree, the assistant stops trusting your data. That mismatch can get your listing suppressed. Audit for price drift regularly.
9. No structured data on the product page
The feed is half the job. The page needs Product schema too, so assistants reading the live page get the same clean signals. Run your pages through the Rich Results Test to confirm.
Where to start
Fix identifiers and titles first. Those two earn the most matches for the least work. Then clean descriptions, attributes, and categories. Most stores can clear five of these nine in a single afternoon.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my product feed matter for AI?
AI shopping assistants read your feed, not your visual page, to decide what to recommend. If the feed is incomplete or wrong, the assistant skips you.
What is the single most important feed field?
Unique identifiers like GTINs, followed by shopper-style titles. Those two earn the most product matches for the least effort.
How often should I audit my feed?
Check inventory and price sync continuously, and run a full feed audit monthly. Drift between your feed and your store is a common reason listings get suppressed.
