AI recommends your Shopify products based on nine feed fields: title, description, GTIN, brand, price, availability, product category, images, and attributes. Get those clean and consistent and you get named in answers. Leave them vague and you get skipped.
I ran a $10M clothing brand for 15 years. The stores that win now are not the ones with the prettiest site. They are the ones whose data an AI can actually read. Here is what to fix, in order.
1. Title
The title is the first thing AI reads to match a shopper's question to your product. Lead with brand, product type, then one or two attributes people actually search, like "Allbirds Wool Runner Mizzle Men's Waterproof Sneaker." Google's own Merchant Center title guidance says front-load the important words and skip the sales fluff.
2. Description
The description is where AI confirms the match and pulls the details it quotes back to the shopper. Write it like you are answering a question out loud: material, fit, use case, what makes it different. Keep the key facts in the first two sentences, because that is the part that gets read.
3. GTIN
The GTIN is how an assistant confirms your product is the same item it has seen on other sites. That cross-check is what earns the trust it needs before it names you in an answer. Google treats the GTIN as a core identifier for branded products, so pull it from your supplier and never make one up.
4. Brand
The brand field tells AI who makes the product, which matters the second a shopper asks for a specific name. Fill it on every variant, spelled exactly as the brand spells it. Schema.org's brand property is the field an assistant reads to tie your listing to a known maker.
5. Price
Price decides whether AI even considers you, since assistants now filter by budget before they recommend. Keep it accurate and current, and include currency and any sale price in the structured data, not just on the page. A price that disagrees between your feed and your schema gets the whole listing thrown out.
6. Availability
Availability is the field that stops AI from recommending something a shopper can't buy. Mark it in stock, out of stock, or preorder, and keep it synced in real time. As OpenAI's Instant Checkout and similar features push assistants toward completing the sale, stale stock data gets you quietly dropped.
7. Product Category / Product Type
Category tells AI what the product is so it shows up for the right question instead of none at all. Use Google's product taxonomy for the category field and your own clear product type for the rest. "Apparel > Shoes > Athletic Shoes" means something to a machine. "Cool Kicks" does not.
8. Images
Images are how AI verifies the product is real and matches the words in your feed. Use a clean, high-resolution main image on a plain background, plus angles that show the details you described. Google's image requirements reject placeholders and watermarks, and so does the trust an assistant places in your listing.
9. Product Attributes
Attributes like color, size, material, and gender are what let AI answer a specific ask, like "waterproof trail shoe in black, size 11." Fill every attribute that applies as its own structured field, not buried in the description. The more specific questions your data can answer, the more often you are the answer.
How We Chose This List
These nine fields are the ones AI assistants read first across Shopify's product feed and on-page Product schema. We ranked them by how often a missing or messy field gets a product skipped in live AI shopping results.
FAQ
Q: What is the most important Shopify product feed field for AI search?
The title. AI matches a shopper's question to your product by reading the title first, so it needs the brand, product type, and one or two key attributes in plain words.
Q: Do I need a GTIN for AI to recommend my Shopify product?
For branded products, yes. The GTIN is how an assistant confirms your product is the same item it has seen elsewhere, which builds the trust it needs before naming you.
Q: How does AI read my Shopify product data?
Through your Product schema on each page and through structured feeds like the one Google Merchant Center uses. Both should carry the same clean fields so the data agrees with itself.
Q: Does price and availability really affect AI recommendations?
Yes. Assistants are moving toward completing purchases, so stale or missing price and stock data gets a product skipped before it is ever shown.
