The Shopify AEO audit checks to run before Q4 are simple: verify your schema, feeds, FAQ content, freshness signals, and what AI actually says about you. Q4 is when AI shopping traffic peaks and data gaps cost the most.
This is the short version of the checklist I run before every fourth quarter. Nine checks, each a real failure I keep finding.
1. Product schema is valid and populated
Confirm every product page outputs Product JSON-LD with real name, brand, price, and availability inside it. Valid-but-empty schema is the top miss. Check the price field carries a value, per the Product schema spec.
2. Feed fields are complete
Verify title, description, type, brand, material, color, size, gender, age group, price, and availability on every variant. Grade against Google's product data spec. Start with top revenue products.
3. FAQ content uses question headings
Add FAQ sections with a direct answer in the first one to two sentences, backed by FAQPage schema. FAQ content was the weakest area on nearly every page in my recent audits. It's also the fastest citation win.
4. Content is extractable
Cut boilerplate so substantive copy dominates and AI can pull answers without digging. Content extractability is a near-universal failure. Dense, answerable paragraphs fix it.
5. Freshness signals are present
Check that structured data includes dateModified and your sitemap carries lastmod entries. Stale-looking pages lose trust with search and AI. Freshness is a cheap signal to add.
6. No duplicate schema blocks
Remove duplicate FAQPage or HowTo blocks, because duplicates can cause both to be dropped from rich results. I find this on stores running multiple apps that each inject their own schema.
7. Entity naming is consistent
Standardize your brand name and contact details across HTML metadata and JSON-LD. Inconsistent naming confuses AI about who you are. Add email and phone in your organization schema.
8. Images have descriptive alt text
Fill alt text on content images so visual AI and accessibility signals both improve. Empty alt is only right for decorative images. Descriptive alt helps AI understand your products.
9. You tested real AI answers
Run your buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews and log where you appear. This turns the checklist into a scorecard. If you're invisible, the earlier checks tell you why.
How We Chose These Checks
We ranked the checks by how often they failed across live Shopify audits and how much each one affects AI readability. The order roughly follows impact per hour of work.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Shopify AEO audit?
A Shopify AEO audit checks whether AI answer engines can read, trust, and recommend your store. It reviews product schema, feed completeness, FAQ content, freshness, and what AI assistants actually say about you.
When should I run an AEO audit before Q4?
Run it at least a few weeks before your Q4 peak. Feed and schema changes need time to recrawl and sync, so early fixes mean you're readable when demand rises.
What's the highest-impact check?
Adding real FAQ content with question headings and direct answers, backed by FAQPage schema. It's the most common gap and one of the strongest citation signals.
Do I need paid tools for this audit?
No. You can check schema, feed fields, and AI answers by hand for a first pass. Paid tools help track citations and trends over time, but the initial audit is free.
