Before you hire a Shopify agency to get you cited in AI search, ask them to show you one real AI citation they've already earned for a client. If they can't pull up a live ChatGPT or Perplexity answer with a brand named in it, they're selling you a theory. These nine questions separate the agencies doing the work from the ones repackaging old SEO.
I built a clothing brand to $10 million a year and spent over $5 million of my own money on ads. I know what a real vendor answer sounds like versus a sales pitch. Here's what to ask.
1. Can you show me real AI citations you've already earned?
This is the first filter. A good answer is a screen share of a live AI answer where a client gets named, plus the query that triggered it. A bad answer talks about "positioning you for the future" with nothing to show.
2. Do you optimize product feeds and structured data, not just blog posts?
AI assistants read your products through feeds and schema, not vibes. A good agency talks about Product schema, clean feeds, and the Schema.org Product markup that models rely on. A bad one only pitches blog content and keywords.
3. How do you measure share of voice in AI answers?
You want to know how often you get named versus your competitors for the questions that matter. A good answer describes tracking a set of buyer prompts and reporting your mention rate over time. A bad answer confuses this with Google rankings.
4. Do you understand agentic checkout?
Agentic checkout means an AI buys the product for the shopper without a store visit. Shopify already supports this through its work on agentic commerce, so the agency needs to prep your catalog for bots that buy. A good answer explains it plainly. A blank stare is your answer.
5. Which AI assistants do you actually track?
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI answers each pull sources differently. A good agency names the ones they track and explains why each one matters for a Shopify buyer. A bad one lumps them all into "AI" and moves on.
6. What does your reporting look like?
Ask to see a real report before you sign. A good one shows citation counts, share of voice, and the exact queries you're winning or losing. A bad one hides behind a traffic chart that says nothing about AI.
7. How do you build authority off my site?
Models trust brands that get mentioned across the web, not just on their own pages. A good answer covers reviews, third-party mentions, and getting your name onto sources AI already cites. A bad one thinks on-page content alone will do it.
8. What happens when an AI model changes how it ranks answers?
These systems shift often, and OpenAI publishes changes through its official updates. A good agency has a process to test and adjust when a model moves. A bad one will be caught flat and blame the algorithm.
9. Can you name a store you moved from invisible to cited?
One specific story beats a hundred promises. A good answer names a brand, the starting point, and the queries it now wins. A bad answer gives you a case study with no numbers and no names.
How We Chose These Questions
Each question targets a place where fake AEO agencies fall apart: proof, product data, measurement, and agentic buying. We built this from real vendor calls and the work we do getting Shopify brands cited. FAQ
How do I know if a Shopify agency can really get me cited in AI search?
Ask for a live AI answer where they got a client named. A real agency can pull up a ChatGPT or Perplexity response and point to the client. If they only talk about traffic and rankings, they don't do this work yet.
Do product feeds and structured data actually affect AI shopping results?
Yes. AI assistants pull product data through feeds and schema markup to answer shopping questions. A brand with clean, complete Product schema is easier for a model to quote than one with thin product pages.
What is agentic checkout?
Agentic checkout is when an AI assistant completes a purchase for the user instead of sending them to your site. Shopify and OpenAI both support this now, so your product data has to be ready for a bot to buy, not just a human to browse.
How long before a Shopify brand shows up in AI answers?
It varies, but expect 60 to 120 days for the first citations if the technical foundation and authority work start day one. Anyone promising a specific date is guessing.
