9 Product Feed Errors That Make AI Ignore Your Shopify Store

The nine feed errors that get Shopify stores ignored by AI: missing GTINs, vague titles, no product type, false availability, weak images, empty attributes, currency mismatches, duplicate variants, and stale syncs. Fix these and AI assistants can actually read your catalog.

Most stores have at least four of these. I've never audited one with zero.

1. Missing GTINs and MPNs

Without a GTIN or MPN, an AI can't confirm your product is the real thing versus a knockoff listing. Add them wherever they exist. Google Merchant Center treats these as identity anchors, and AI assistants borrow the same logic.

2. Titles built for keywords, not clarity

A title stuffed with "best cheap organic vegan" reads as spam to a model. Write titles a human would say out loud. Brand, product, key attribute. That's it.

3. No product type or category

An untyped product is a floating object with no shelf. Assign a specific product type and Google product category. This is how AI knows your item belongs in a "running shoes" answer and not a "socks" one.

4. Availability that lies

Showing sold-out items as in stock is the fastest way to lose trust. AI assistants avoid recommending things shoppers can't buy. Sync availability in real time.

5. One low-resolution image

AI shopping surfaces are visual now. A single blurry photo gives the model little to work with. Add multiple high-resolution images with descriptive alt text on every product.

6. Empty attribute fields

Color, size, material, gender, age group. When these are blank, your product can't match a filtered query like "waterproof hiking boots for women." Fill every attribute that applies. This is where most stores leak visibility.

7. Currency and price mismatches

When your feed price and your page price disagree, the AI flags the listing as unreliable. Keep them identical. Include currency explicitly so there's no guessing.

8. Duplicate variants as separate products

Listing every size as its own product splits your review signals and confuses the model. Group variants under a parent. One product, clear options. Cleaner for AI and for shoppers.

9. A feed that never refreshes

A feed synced once a month tells AI your store might be abandoned. Refresh daily at minimum. We watched a client's citation rate climb after nothing changed except moving from weekly to daily syncs.

How We Chose This List

These nine come from feed audits across live Shopify stores. We ranked by how often each error was the direct cause of a product getting filtered out, based on AEO readiness scoring.

FAQ

Q: Which error should I fix first?

Availability accuracy and product type. Those two block the most recommendations for the least effort.

Q: Do these errors affect Google Shopping too?

Yes. The same feed hygiene that helps AI assistants also improves Google Merchant Center performance.

Q: How do I check my feed for these?

Export your product feed and audit it field by field, or run an AEO readiness scan that flags the gaps automatically.
