The fastest way to get AI to recommend your Shopify store is to fix your product data. Fill missing GTINs and brand fields, rewrite thin titles, add real specs, and sync your price and availability. These are the fields AI assistants and Google's Shopping Graph read first, and most stores are missing half of them.
I've had a hard time getting this through to store owners. They want a clever hack. The win is boring. It's clean data. Here are the nine fixes that move the needle.
1. Fill in missing GTIN and brand fields
A GTIN is the barcode number that identifies your product across the web, and brand is the maker. When both are missing, AI systems can't match your product to anything, so you get skipped. Google Merchant Center treats GTIN and brand as core identifiers, and Shopify has dedicated fields for both. Fill them.
2. Rewrite your thin product titles
A title like "Blue Shirt" tells AI nothing. Rewrite it as brand, product type, and a defining attribute, like "Patagonia Men's Organic Cotton Tee - Navy." Shopify pulls the title into your structured data, and specific titles match more of the questions people ask an assistant.
3. Add specific product attributes
Color, size, material, gender, age group. These attributes are how AI narrows a recommendation from "a jacket" to "your jacket." Google's product data spec lists dozens of them, and the more you fill accurately, the more buyer questions your product can answer.
4. Write real descriptions with the specs in them
Marketing fluff doesn't get cited. A description that states dimensions, materials, fit, and use case does. AI assistants extract facts from descriptions to answer specific buyer questions, so bury the specs in plain sentences instead of a spec table nobody parses. Write it the way you'd explain the product to a friend.
5. Fix your availability and price sync
Nothing kills trust faster than an out-of-stock item showing as available. OpenAI's shopping features and Google both pull live availability and price, and stale data gets your product quietly dropped. Shopify's Google & YouTube channel syncs inventory automatically, so use it and check it weekly.
6. Add review schema to your product pages
Ratings and reviews are a trust signal AI leans on hard. Adding Schema.org AggregateRating markup lets an assistant see that 400 people rated the product 4.6 stars, which raises the odds it gets recommended over an unrated competitor. Most review apps inject this markup for you.
7. Categorize your products correctly
Wrong category, wrong recommendations. AI uses your product category to understand what the item is and who it's for, and a mislabeled product gets surfaced to the wrong buyer or not at all. Shopify maps to the Google product taxonomy, so pick the most specific category that fits, not the broadest.
8. Add high-quality images with real alt text
AI reads your alt text to understand what an image shows. Blank alt text or "IMG_4821.jpg" tells it nothing, so write a plain description of the product in the photo. Google's shopping systems favor clear, high-resolution images on a clean background, and that same clarity helps assistants trust the listing.
9. Remove duplicate and empty fields
Empty fields and duplicate variants confuse AI parsers and drag down the quality of your whole feed. Export your catalog, sort for blanks, and clean them in the Shopify bulk editor. One messy variant can pull down how the entire product reads. Kill it.
How I chose these nine
Every fix on this list maps to a field that Google Merchant Center, Schema.org, or the major AI assistants read directly, and every one is something a store owner can do without a developer. I ranked them by speed and impact. Start at the top.
FAQ
What product data matters most for AI visibility?
GTIN, brand, accurate titles, specific attributes, and real availability. AI assistants and Google's Shopping Graph match products on these fields, so filling them is the fastest way to get recommended.
How long do these product-data fixes take?
Most are bulk edits you can finish in an afternoon using Shopify's bulk editor or a CSV export. Filling GTINs, fixing titles, and cleaning empty fields don't require a developer.
Does review schema help AI recommend my Shopify store?
Yes. Product review and rating data in Schema.org markup gives AI assistants a signal that other buyers trust the product, which raises the odds it gets surfaced in a recommendation.
Do I need Google Merchant Center for AI visibility?
It helps. Google Merchant Center feeds the Shopping Graph, and clean feed data there tends to carry over to how AI reads your catalog. Shopify syncs to it through the Google & YouTube channel.
