Why isn't your content showing up in AI answers?
The most common reason AI assistants skip your content is that you bury the answer, skip schema, and write for Google instead of the machine reading the page. Fix those three and you fix most of your AEO problem. Here are the nine mistakes I see over and over, and the fix for each.
I've had a hard time learning some of these myself. A few of them cost me months. So this list is the stuff I'd tell a friend over coffee, not a theory deck.
1. Burying the answer
AI reads the first sentence that answers the question and cites it. If your answer sits three paragraphs down behind a story and a definition, it never gets read. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences of every page. Then explain. Not before.
2. No schema markup
Schema is the code that tells AI what your page is instead of making it guess from the words. No markup means the machine has to interpret, and interpretation is where you lose. Add FAQPage, Article, and Organization schema. Google's own structured data documentation lays out exactly how.
3. No FAQ or question-answer structure
People ask AI questions. If your page is one long essay with no questions in it, there's nothing clean for the assistant to lift. Break content into real questions as headings with short answers under each. That structure is what gets read back word for word.
4. Thin content
A 200-word page that says nothing specific gives AI nothing to cite. It needs facts, numbers, and a clear point of view to trust you. Say something real. One concrete data point beats five paragraphs of fluff every time. If you wouldn't quote your own sentence out loud, neither will the machine.
5. No third-party presence
AI doesn't just trust your site. It trusts what other sites say about you. If you have zero presence on Wikipedia, Reddit, industry directories, or news coverage, you look like an entity that doesn't exist. Get mentioned in places you don't own.
6. Keyword-stuffing instead of answering
Jamming the same phrase in fifteen times is a 2012 trick, and AI treats it as noise. Answer engines reward content that actually resolves the question, not content built to game a ranking. Write the answer a human would want. The keyword shows up naturally when you do.
7. Ignoring freshness
AI assistants lean toward recent content, especially for anything that changes. A page dated three years ago with no updates reads as stale and gets passed over. Add visible publish and updated dates, and actually refresh the facts. ChatGPT's search feature pulls current web results for exactly this reason.
8. No clear entity signals
AI needs to know who you are, what you do, and how you connect to the topic. Vague "we help businesses grow" copy gives it nothing to anchor to. Name your company, your category, your location, and your people clearly and consistently across every page. Match that same language on your social profiles and listings. That consistency is what builds you into a recognized entity the machine can actually name.
9. Writing for Google only
Writing purely for the ten blue links is the mistake that quietly undoes everything else. According to Gartner, search engine volume is set to drop 25% by 2026 as people move to AI chatbots. That's one in four searches walking away from the format you optimized for. Write for the answer engine, and the search engine still gets fed.
How we chose this list
These are the nine mistakes we see most often when we audit sites that aren't showing up in AI answers. Each one maps to a specific, fixable gap, ranked by how frequently it's the thing holding a site back.
FAQ
Q: What is the most common AEO mistake?
Burying the answer. AI pulls the sentence that answers the question directly, so if that sentence is three paragraphs down, it gets skipped. Lead every page with the answer.
Q: Does schema markup actually help with AEO?
Yes. Schema tells AI what your content is instead of making it guess. FAQPage, Article, and Organization schema are the ones that move the needle for citations.
Q: How long does it take to see AEO results?
Usually a few weeks to a couple of months. AI assistants re-crawl on their own schedule, so fixes don't show up the same day the way a paid ad does.
Q: Is AEO different from SEO?
They overlap but they're not the same. SEO optimizes for ten blue links. AEO optimizes to be the one answer an assistant reads back to a user.
