The top AEO factor is whether AI can read and verify your product facts. Everything else builds on that. Here are the nine that decide whether an assistant recommends you or your competitor.
AEO is answer engine optimization. It's the work of getting AI to trust and quote you. These are the levers that actually move it.
1. Machine-readable product data
Valid Product and Offer markup is the base. If AI can't read your price and availability as facts, nothing else you do matters much.
This is the one factor with no workaround. Get it right first, then optimize the rest.
2. Direct, quotable answers
Assistants lift clear answers, not clever copy. A page that answers the buyer's question in the first sentence is a page AI can quote.
Lead with the answer, then explain. That structure is what gets pulled into an AI result.
3. Question-style headings
Headings written as the questions buyers actually ask help AI match your content to a prompt. "How do I..." beats a clever one-word header every time.
It's a small change with a real payoff. Write headings the way your customer talks.
4. FAQPage schema with real answers
Marked-up FAQPage content gives AI clean Q&A pairs it can read and cite directly. Plain answers beat padded ones.
Keep each answer self-contained so it makes sense lifted out of the page.
5. Named, credible sources
Citing real sources by name signals trust. "Studies show" is worthless. "Google's product guidelines" is something a model can weigh.
Link to primary sources instead of vague claims.
6. Crawler access for AI bots
If your robots.txt blocks AI user agents, you're invisible before the content ever matters. Check it first.
Access is a prerequisite, not a factor you can trade off. Open the door.
7. Accurate, current data
Stale prices and stock teach AI to distrust you. One caught mismatch and it drops your data. Freshness is a ranking factor now.
Sync your feed and schema to real inventory and keep them agreeing.
8. Feed completeness
Blank GTINs and brands stop AI from confirming your product against a query. Complete feeds get matched. Incomplete ones get skipped.
Fill every field the Google Merchant spec asks for on your best sellers first.
9. Real topical authority
AI favors sources that clearly know the subject. A store with deep, consistent content on its category reads as an authority worth quoting.
Pick your lane and go deep. Scattered content reads as thin to a machine looking for the trusted answer.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the most important AEO ranking factors?
Machine-readable product data comes first, valid Product and Offer markup, followed by direct quotable answers, question-style headings, FAQPage schema, named sources, and crawler access. Data accuracy, feed completeness, and topical authority round out the factors that decide whether AI recommends you.
How is AEO different from SEO ranking factors?
SEO factors aim to rank a link for a click, focusing on keywords, backlinks, and page speed. AEO factors aim to be the trusted fact AI quotes, focusing on structured data, quotable answers, source credibility, and data accuracy. They overlap on basics but optimize for different outcomes.
Which AEO factor should I fix first?
Start with machine-readable product data and crawler access. If AI can't read your Product and Offer markup or is blocked by your robots.txt, no other optimization matters. Once those are solid, move to quotable answers and FAQPage schema.
