How do you get your brand cited by Perplexity and ChatGPT?
You get cited by answering the exact question in your first two sentences, marking up your pages with structured data, letting AI crawlers in, and earning mentions on sources these engines already trust. The brands that win are the ones that give a clean, quotable answer and back it with proof. Here are the eight ways that actually move the needle.
1. Answer the exact question in the first two sentences
Lead every page with a direct one or two sentence answer to the question your reader is asking. Perplexity and ChatGPT lift the cleanest answer they can find, so bury it under a 300-word intro and you lose. Say the thing first. Explain it after.
2. Add structured data to every page
Mark up your pages with Article, FAQPage, and Organization schema so engines can read your facts without guessing. Google has confirmed that structured data helps machines understand content, and the same markup makes it easier for AI to pull a clean answer and name you. It is free, it is fast, and most of your competitors skip it.
3. Let the crawlers in
Check your robots.txt and make sure you are not blocking the bots that feed these engines. ChatGPT crawls with OAI-SearchBot and Perplexity crawls with PerplexityBot, both documented in their own OpenAI bot documentation and Perplexity crawler docs. Block them and you take yourself out of the running before the game starts.
4. Get mentioned on sites AI already trusts
Earn mentions on third-party sites with real authority, because AI engines weigh what others say about you more than what you say about yourself. A citation in an industry publication, a Wikipedia reference, or a roundup from a trusted blog tells the model you are a credible source. One good mention on a trusted site beats ten pages on your own domain.
5. Publish original data nobody else has
Run a survey, pull your own numbers, or publish results from your own work, then put a specific stat in a headline. AI loves citing the original source of a fact, and if you own the data, you own the citation. Vague opinions get skipped. A real number with your name on it gets pulled.
6. Write listicles and comparison pages
Build "best X" lists, "X ways" guides, and head-to-head comparison pages, because these formats map directly to how people ask AI questions. Research from Semrush on AI search behavior shows listicles and comparison content get cited at high rates in AI answers. Structure the content the way the question is asked and you make the engine's job easy.
7. Put a real author behind the content
Attach a named human author with a real bio and credentials to every page. Engines look for signals of expertise and trust, and anonymous content reads like it could have come from anywhere. A byline with a track record tells the model a person who knows the topic stands behind the words.
8. Keep your facts current and consistent
Update your dates, stats, and claims on a schedule, and make sure the same fact reads the same way everywhere you publish it. Perplexity pulls from live results, so stale pages get passed over for fresh ones. Contradict yourself across pages and you give the engine a reason to trust someone else instead.
How We Chose This List
These eight tactics come from the signals Perplexity and ChatGPT actually use to pick sources, confirmed through their own published crawler and search documentation and our own testing across live client sites. We left out anything we could not tie to a real citation.
FAQ
Q: How do I get cited by Perplexity and ChatGPT?
Answer the exact question clearly in your first two sentences, add structured data, let AI crawlers access your site, and earn mentions on sources AI already trusts. These engines cite pages that give a clean, quotable answer backed by authority.
Q: How long does it take to get cited by AI search engines?
Perplexity pulls from live search results, so new or updated pages can get cited within days. ChatGPT uses both live browsing and training data, so browsing citations happen fast while training-based mentions take longer.
Q: Does schema markup help with AI citations?
Yes. Structured data like FAQPage and Article schema makes it easier for engines to read your facts and pull a clean answer, which raises the odds they name you as the source.
Q: Do I need to block or allow AI crawlers?
If you want citations, allow them. ChatGPT uses OAI-SearchBot and Perplexity uses PerplexityBot. Block those user agents in robots.txt and you remove yourself from the pool of pages they can cite.
