To get your Shopify products into ChatGPT shopping results, you need clean Product schema on every page, a product feed submitted to Microsoft and Google, and pages that OpenAI's crawler can actually read. ChatGPT shopping pulls from structured feeds and live web search, not from guesswork. Here are the 8 steps, in order.
What does ChatGPT shopping actually look at?
It looks at structured product data, merchant feeds, and whatever its search crawler can find on the open web. If your product page is a wall of marketing copy with no schema, ChatGPT has nothing to grab. Fix the data layer first. Everything else follows.
1. Add Product schema to every product page
Put valid Product JSON-LD on every product page, with name, description, price, currency, and availability filled in. This is the single most important step, because it hands ChatGPT the facts in a format it trusts. Shopify's default themes often ship thin or broken schema, so check yours against Schema.org's Product spec and Google's Rich Results Test.
2. Submit a clean product feed to Microsoft and Google
ChatGPT shopping leans on merchant feeds, and Microsoft's commerce data feeds directly into that pipeline. Set up Microsoft Merchant Center and Google Merchant Center and push a complete feed with titles, prices, images, and GTINs. A feed with missing fields gets filtered out before a shopper ever sees it.
3. Make sure your products are crawlable by OAI-SearchBot
ChatGPT search uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot, and if your robots.txt blocks it, you are invisible. Open your robots.txt and confirm you are not blocking it, then read OpenAI's own bots documentation to get the user agents right. Blocking the bot to "protect content" is the fastest way to disappear from AI shopping.
4. Rewrite product titles and descriptions as plain answers
Write titles and descriptions the way a person would ask for the product, not the way a brand team wants it to sound. "Waterproof hiking boots for wide feet, men's" beats "TrailMaster Pro X Series." ChatGPT matches intent, so the closer your words are to how people actually shop, the more often you get pulled in.
5. Fill in price, availability, and shipping in real time
Keep price, stock status, and shipping accurate across your schema and your feeds, and update them the moment they change. ChatGPT shopping shows live product cards, and a wrong price or an out-of-stock item that still reads "available" gets you dropped. Stale data is worse than no data here.
6. Collect real reviews and mark them up with schema
Add AggregateRating and Review schema to your product pages, backed by actual customer reviews. Products with ratings get surfaced more often because ChatGPT wants to recommend things people liked. No fake reviews. The models and the review platforms are both getting good at catching them.
7. Build third-party mentions that back up your products
ChatGPT trusts products that other sites talk about, so a mention in a roundup, a real review, or a Reddit thread carries weight your own site can't. Get your products into gift guides, comparison posts, and buyer roundups in your category. One honest third-party review often moves the needle more than ten pages of your own copy.
8. Check what ChatGPT actually says about your store
Open ChatGPT and ask it to recommend products in your category, then see if you show up and whether the details are right. This is the only way to know if the first seven steps worked. Track it monthly, because the shopping results shift as OpenAI updates how it pulls product data. OpenAI explains the shopping experience in its own shopping help docs.
How We Chose These Steps
These steps come from running AEO work on live Shopify stores and watching what actually moves products into AI shopping results. The order matters: data layer first, feeds second, visibility checks last. Skip the schema and nothing downstream works.
FAQ
Q: Do I need to pay OpenAI to show up in ChatGPT shopping?
No. ChatGPT shopping results are organic right now and pull from product feeds and web search, not paid placements. Clean data gets you in, not a budget.
Q: How long does it take to show up after I fix my product data?
Usually a few weeks, once the feed is accepted and the crawler re-indexes your pages. Feed approval is often the slowest part, so submit early.
Q: Does Shopify do any of this automatically?
Partly. Shopify ships basic Product schema and can push feeds through apps, but the default setup is rarely complete or clean enough on its own. You still need to check the schema and fill in the gaps.
Q: Is ChatGPT shopping different from Google Shopping?
Yes, but they overlap. ChatGPT pulls from merchant feeds and live web search, so a strong Google and Microsoft feed helps both. The crawlability and schema work carries across all of them.
