How do you know if AI shopping assistants can't see your Shopify store?
You're invisible to AI when your store isn't named in a buying answer and you have no product schema, JS-only content, thin descriptions, missing review markup, no Merchant Center feed, no FAQ content, stale timestamps, or an ambiguous brand identity. Here are the 8 signs, what each one means, and the quick fix. If more than three sound like you, AI is recommending your competitors instead.
I ran a $10M ecommerce brand for 15 years. I know how invisible a good store can be when the plumbing is wrong. These are the eight signs I check first.
1. No Product Schema Markup
If your product pages don't ship structured Product data, AI has to guess your price, availability, and specs. It usually guesses wrong, or skips you entirely. This is the single most common gap I find on live Shopify stores. Fix it by adding complete Product schema with name, price, availability, and offers, then confirm it in Google's Product structured data docs and the Rich Results Test.
2. JavaScript-Only Content
Many AI crawlers read raw HTML and never run your JavaScript. So descriptions, specs, or reviews loaded by apps after the page renders can be completely invisible to them. Check your page source with JS disabled, and make sure core product content lives in the server HTML, not in a client-side script.
3. Thin or Duplicate Product Descriptions
Manufacturer copy pasted across a hundred stores gives AI no reason to cite you over anyone else. Same words, same product, no edge. Rewrite each description with unique details, real use cases, and specifics AI can quote back to a shopper.
4. No Reviews or Ratings Markup
AI leans on social proof to decide what to recommend, and it reads that proof through structured AggregateRating and Review data. No markup means your five-star products look the same as an empty listing. Add review schema through your reviews app and validate it against Schema.org's Review type.
5. Missing Feed in Google Merchant Center
Your Merchant Center feed is one of the cleanest structured sources AI shopping features pull from for price and stock. No feed, or a disapproved one, and you drop out of that data layer. Connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center and clear every product disapproval.
6. No FAQ Content
Shoppers ask AI questions, not keywords. If your pages don't answer real questions about sizing, shipping, materials, or returns, AI has nothing of yours to quote back to a buyer. Direct answers to real questions are exactly what AI pulls into its recommendations. Add an FAQ section to key product and collection pages with FAQPage schema, and write answers the way a customer actually asks.
7. Stale dateModified Timestamps
AI favors content that looks current, and it reads freshness partly from your dateModified field. A timestamp from two years ago signals a dead page even if the product is in stock. Update the content and the modified date when anything real changes, so your pages read as live.
8. Brand Entity Ambiguity
If AI can't tell who your brand is, it won't confidently recommend you by name. That happens when your name, logo, and details are inconsistent across your site, social, and third-party mentions. Lock down consistent Organization schema, a clean sameAs list, and matching NAP data, following the Google Organization schema guidance.
How We Chose These Signs
Each sign maps to a specific input AI shopping assistants use: structured data, crawlable HTML, review signals, product feeds, and entity clarity. We prioritized the failures we see most often on live Shopify stores and the ones with the fastest fixes.
FAQ
How do I know if AI can see my Shopify store?
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity a buying question in your category and see if your store gets named. If it doesn't, check for Product schema, server-rendered content, review markup, and a live Merchant Center feed.
Does Shopify add product schema automatically?
Some themes add basic Product schema, but many are incomplete or missing price, availability, and review fields. Test every template in Google's Rich Results Test instead of trusting the theme.
Can AI shopping assistants read JavaScript-rendered content?
Often no. Many AI crawlers pull the raw HTML and never run JavaScript, so app-injected content can be invisible. Make sure your core product details render in the server HTML.
How fast can I fix AI invisibility on Shopify?
Many fixes take a day. Complete Product schema, rewritten descriptions, and a connected Merchant Center feed are same-week changes. Brand entity work takes longer because it depends on outside sources.
Stop guessing which of these eight is costing you sales. Run a WRKNG Digital AI visibility audit and see exactly where AI stops seeing your store.
