Your store isn't ready for agentic commerce if AI agents can't read your product data, trust your prices, or complete a purchase without a human. These eight signs tell you where you stand. Most stores hit at least four.
Agentic commerce means AI agents browse, compare, and buy on a shopper's behalf. Shopify is building toward it. The stores that fix these signs now compound ahead of everyone else when the gates open.
1. Your product data lives only in images
An agent can't read a spec sheet baked into a JPG. If your sizes, materials, and features only exist inside product photos, they don't exist to a bot. Put everything in text.
2. No structured data on your product pages
Structured data is how an agent parses your catalog fast. Without Product schema, the agent has to scrape and guess. Guessing loses to competitors who spelled it out.
3. Your inventory and price sync is unreliable
Agents won't transact on data they can't trust. A price that's wrong half the time gets your store skipped. Shopify's own agentic commerce direction assumes real-time, accurate signals. Flaky sync is a dealbreaker.
4. Your checkout blocks bots and headless flows
Aggressive bot-blocking made sense against scrapers. It works against buying agents too. If your checkout can't accept a legitimate agent-driven purchase, you lose the sale. This is coming faster than most stores plan for.
5. No return or shipping policy in machine-readable form
Agents check policies before they buy. Shipping cost, delivery window, and returns all factor into a recommendation. Bury that info in a PDF and the agent moves on to a store that published it cleanly.
6. Thin or missing product descriptions
Three words and a photo won't cut it. Agents match products to intent using description text. The more specific and honest your copy, the better the match. I've seen thin descriptions cost stores every comparison query in their category.
7. No presence on sites AI already trusts
Agents weight third-party signals heavily. If no review site, roundup, or guide mentions you, you have no outside validation. That absence reads as risk.
8. You have no way to measure AI visibility
You can't fix what you can't see. If you've never checked whether ChatGPT or Perplexity mentions your store, you're flying blind. Measurement is step zero.
How We Chose This List
These eight come from AI readiness audits on live Shopify stores, ranked by how hard each one blocks an agent from completing a transaction. The top four are technical. The bottom four are about trust and visibility.
FAQ
What is agentic commerce?
It's shopping done by AI agents that browse, compare, and buy for a person. The agent reads product data, checks policies, and completes checkout.
Is agentic commerce live on Shopify yet?
Shopify is rolling out the pieces. Full agent-driven checkout for every store is still arriving, which is exactly why prep work now pays off.
What's the first thing to fix?
Get your product data into clean text with structured data. Nothing else works until an agent can read your catalog.
How do I check my store's readiness?
Run an AI commerce audit that scores your structured data, feed quality, and visibility across AI models.
