The eight Shopify store checks to run before AI shopping traffic arrives are: valid product schema, a complete product feed, visible review signals, fast and extractable pages, clean canonical tags, consistent brand naming, real FAQ answers, and an accurate dateModified. Run all eight and an AI agent can read, trust, and recommend your store. Skip them and it moves on to a competitor.
I sold a clothing brand that did $10 million a year. I know how much a store leaks when the plumbing is wrong. AI shopping agents are unforgiving in a way human shoppers never were. Here's the pre-flight checklist.
1. Is your product schema present and valid?
Product schema is the structured data that tells an AI agent your price, availability, and rating in a format it trusts. Paste a product URL into the Google Rich Results Test and look for a valid Product result with no errors. Pass: it detects Product with price and rating. Fail: it shows warnings or finds no Product at all.
2. Is your product feed complete?
A complete feed carries every field an agent needs to compare you: title, price, GTIN, availability, and image. Open your feed in Shopify and confirm no products are missing GTIN or price. Shopify's Google channel docs spell out the required fields. Pass: zero disapproved items. Fail: products dropped for missing attributes.
3. Do your product pages carry review signals?
Reviews are the trust layer. AI agents pull star ratings and review counts straight from your AggregateRating markup to decide whether you're worth citing. Check that ratings render in the page source, not just in a widget that loads later. Pass: rating and review count sit in the HTML. Fail: reviews only appear after a script fires.
4. Are your pages fast and extractable?
Speed matters, but extractability matters more. If your price and title only appear after JavaScript runs, a crawler that doesn't execute scripts sees a blank page. Turn off JavaScript in your browser and reload a product page. Pass: title, price, and description still show. Fail: the page is empty.
5. Is your canonical and duplicate URL hygiene clean?
Shopify creates duplicate paths for the same product through collections and variant parameters. Without a correct canonical tag, an agent can't tell which URL is the real one and may skip all of them. Check the canonical tag on a product reached through a collection link. Pass: it points to the clean /products/ URL. Fail: it points to the /collections/ path.
6. Is your brand entity consistent everywhere?
An AI agent builds a picture of your brand from every mention it finds. Your name, logo, and description need to match across your site, your Organization schema, and your social profiles. Mixed spellings or a missing sameAs block splits your identity in two. Pass: one consistent name and a sameAs array. Fail: three versions of your brand name across four places.
7. Do you have FAQ and answer content?
AI agents lift direct answers from pages that give them cleanly. A short FAQ on shipping, sizing, and returns feeds the exact questions shoppers ask an agent before they buy. Google Search Central documents the FAQPage markup that makes it machine-readable. Pass: question-and-answer content with FAQPage schema. Fail: no answer content on the page.
8. Is your freshness signal accurate?
dateModified tells an agent the page is current. Agents weight fresh pages higher than stale ones, so a date that never changes reads as neglect. Update it whenever price, stock, or copy changes. Pass: dateModified reflects your last real edit. Fail: every page shows the same date from a year ago.
How We Chose These Checks
These eight come from auditing live Shopify stores and watching which ones AI agents actually cite. Each check maps to a specific reason an agent trusts or ignores a page. No theory. Just what moves the needle.
FAQ
How do I know if AI shopping agents can read my Shopify store?
Run the Google Rich Results Test on a product URL and disable JavaScript in your browser to see what loads without it. If your price, title, and reviews still show, an AI agent can read them. If the page goes blank, you have an extractability problem.
Do I need product schema for AI shopping traffic?
Yes. Product schema tells AI shopping agents your price, availability, and rating in a structured format they trust. Without it, the agent has to guess, and guessing usually means skipping your store.
How often should I update my Shopify content for AI?
Update dateModified whenever price, stock, or copy changes. AI agents weight fresh pages higher than stale ones, so an accurate dateModified is a real ranking signal, not a vanity field.
What is the fastest check I can run right now?
Paste a product URL into the Google Rich Results Test. It validates your schema in under a minute and flags missing fields. That single check catches the most common reason AI agents ignore a store.
