After any major Shopify release, check these eight settings before your AI visibility quietly drops. Releases break schema and feeds more often than owners expect. This is the thirty-minute audit we run for clients every time.
1. Product Schema on Live Pages
Confirm your Product markup still renders on live product pages. Theme and release updates strip schema more often than you'd think. Run a few pages through Google's Rich Results Test to be sure (Google Rich Results Test).
2. Metafield-to-Attribute Mapping
Metafields hold the attributes AI reads. A release can change how they map to your product model. Verify size, material, color, and category fields still populate correctly. Broken mappings make your products unreadable.
3. Product Descriptions as Text
Spot-check that descriptions render as real text, not images or script-injected blocks. Models read text. If a template change buried your copy, a model sees a blank product. That's a silent killer.
4. FAQ Schema Integrity
FAQ markup is a strong citation target for AI answers. Confirm it still validates and isn't duplicated. Duplicate FAQPage blocks cause engines to drop both, so keep one clean block per page.
5. Canonical Tags
Canonicals prevent duplicate-content confusion that dilutes your signals. Check that product and collection pages point to the right canonical URL after the update. Shopify's product URLs can shift with structural changes.
6. Sitemap Lastmod Dates
AI and search engines use freshness signals. Confirm your sitemap updates lastmod dates when products change. Stale dates tell engines your content is old even when it isn't.
7. Image Alt Text
Alt text gives models context for product images and fills gaps in your data. Check that content images have descriptive alt text after theme changes. Empty alt belongs only on decorative images, per Google's guidance (Google image best practices).
8. Catalog Feed Connection
Your Catalog feeds AI shopping surfaces. Confirm the connection survived the release and your products still sync. A dropped feed means your clean data never reaches the answers it's meant to.
How We Chose This List
These are the settings we've seen break most often after Shopify releases, ranked by how badly a break hits AI visibility. Schema and feed issues top the list because they cut off the data pipeline entirely.
FAQ
How often do releases break schema?
More than owners expect. We've caught theme and release updates stripping product schema twice this year on client stores. Always re-check.
What's the fastest check on this list?
Schema validation. Run a few product pages through the Rich Results Test. It catches the most damaging silent breaks in minutes.
Do I need all eight checks every time?
After major releases, yes. Between them, a monthly schema and feed spot-check is enough for most stores.
Will Shopify tell me if something broke?
Usually not for AI visibility. The store looks fine to shoppers while going dark to models. You have to check yourself.
