AI shopping assistants don't read your whole feed with equal attention. They check a handful of fields first, and those fields decide whether your product is even considered. Get them right and you're in the running. Leave them blank and you're invisible.

Here are the eight fields an assistant checks first on a Shopify product, in the order they matter.

1. Title

The title is the first thing an assistant reads to understand what your product is. A vague title like "The Weekender" tells it nothing. "Weekender Duffel Bag, 40L, Water-Resistant Canvas" tells it everything.

Put the product type and key attributes in the title. That's how the assistant matches you to a buyer's request.

2. Price and priceCurrency

An assistant checks the price early because it can't recommend what it can't quote. If the price is missing or hidden, you drop out before the comparison starts.

Keep price and priceCurrency in readable structured data, per the Google Merchant product data specification, and make them match the page.

3. Availability

The assistant checks whether the product is actually buyable. A perfect listing that's out of stock is useless to an agent trying to complete a purchase.

Keep availability accurate and current so you're not recommended for something a shopper can't buy.

4. Product type and category

Category tells the assistant where your product fits. Mislabel it and you show up for the wrong searches, or none at all.

Use a clear, standard category so the assistant slots you into the right comparisons.

5. GTIN or unique identifier

A GTIN or unique ID lets the assistant match your product to a known item and cross-check details across sources. It's a trust anchor.

Include a valid identifier where one exists. It helps the assistant confirm you're selling what you say you're selling.

6. Key attributes: size, color, material

These are the fields buyers filter on, so the assistant reads them to match intent. "Waterproof" or "size 10" only helps if it's in a field, not buried in a paragraph.

Fill the attribute fields explicitly. Structured attributes get matched. Prose gets skipped.

7. Description

The description is where the assistant looks for the specifics a buyer asked about. A description packed with clear facts gives it plenty to quote.

Write it in plain facts, not vague praise. State the use case, the specs, and the limits.

8. Image with clean metadata

The assistant uses images and their alt text to confirm what the product is. A missing or generic image weakens its confidence.

Use a clear product image and descriptive alt text so the visual and the data agree.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which product feed field matters most for AI shopping?

Title and price come first, because the assistant needs to know what the product is and whether it can quote a real number. If either is vague or missing, your product drops out before the comparison begins.

Do I need a GTIN for AI shopping assistants?

Where one exists, yes. A GTIN or unique identifier lets the assistant match your product to a known item and cross-check its details, which builds confidence in your listing.

Should product attributes go in fields or the description?

In dedicated fields. Buyers filter on size, color, and material, so the assistant reads structured attributes to match intent. The same facts buried only in a paragraph often get skipped.

Does image alt text affect AI shopping visibility?

Yes. Assistants use images and alt text to confirm what a product is, so clear images with descriptive alt text strengthen their confidence in your listing.
