The most common llms.txt mistakes Shopify stores make right now are skipping the file entirely, treating it like robots.txt, and pointing it at thin or broken pages. llms.txt is a proposed convention, published at llmstxt.org in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI, for telling AI systems where your most important content lives. It remains unofficial and not a guaranteed ranking factor. When you use it, use it right. Here are the 8 mistakes and the fix for each.
1. Not Having an llms.txt File at All
Most Shopify stores have never heard of it. That is the biggest miss. The file is a single Markdown page at yourstore.com/llms.txt with a title, a one-line summary, and curated links to the pages you most want an AI to read. It takes an afternoon to build and costs you nothing to test.
2. Treating llms.txt Like robots.txt
These are not the same file and not the same job. robots.txt tells crawlers what they can and cannot access. llms.txt does the opposite job. It hands an AI a short, curated map of your best content, formatted in Markdown so a model can read it cleanly, per the spec at llmstxt.org. Do not copy your robots rules into it.
3. Blocking or Omitting the Wrong Paths
Stores that do get creative often list junk and skip the pages that matter. Your llms.txt should point to your top collections, your best product pages, your shipping and returns policy, and your about page. Leave out cart, checkout, account, and tag-filter URLs. Guide the AI to the content that answers buyer questions, not the plumbing.
4. Pointing to Thin or Empty Pages
A link is only as good as the page behind it. If your llms.txt sends an AI to a collection with two products and no description, you have wasted the click. Every page you list should have real, readable content a model can quote. Fix the page first, then link it.
5. Giving Zero Product or Catalog Guidance
Shopify stores exist to sell products, yet most llms.txt drafts ignore the catalog completely. Link to your top collections and flagship product pages, and make sure those pages carry proper Product structured data. Shopify supports Product schema through themes and metafields, and Schema.org Product is what tells an AI your price, availability, and reviews. The llms.txt link points the way. The schema fills in the details.
6. Letting Links Go Stale
You retire a collection, rename a URL, or redo your nav. The llms.txt file still points at the old address. Now you are feeding AI systems 404s and dead ends. Review the file every time you change navigation or drop a product line. A stale llms.txt is worse than none.
7. Writing Links With No Context or Descriptions
A bare list of URLs helps no one. The llmstxt.org format calls for a short description after each link so a model understands what it will find. Write it like a human note: "Returns and shipping policy — how we handle 30-day returns and free shipping thresholds." Context is what makes the file useful rather than decorative.
8. Ignoring Machine-Readable Feeds
Your store already produces structured data an AI would love. Shopify generates a sitemap.xml automatically, and platforms like Google Merchant Center consume product feeds built to the Google product data spec. Reference those feeds in your llms.txt so a machine can find the structured version behind the styled page. Point it to the data, not the design.
How We Chose This List
These eight come from auditing real Shopify stores and reading the llms.txt proposal, Shopify's own developer docs, and Schema.org guidance line by line. We ranked them by how often we see the mistake and how much it hurts AI discoverability.
FAQ
Q: Is llms.txt an official standard?
No. It is a proposal published at llmstxt.org in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI. It is not an official web standard and not a confirmed ranking factor. It is a cheap way to guide AI systems that choose to read it.
Q: Where does llms.txt go on a Shopify store?
At the root of your domain, so it lives at yourstore.com/llms.txt. It is a Markdown file with a title, a short summary, and curated links to your most important pages.
Q: Does llms.txt replace robots.txt or a sitemap?
No. robots.txt controls access. A sitemap lists every URL. llms.txt curates the few pages you most want an AI to read. Keep all three.
Q: Will llms.txt get my products into ChatGPT or Perplexity answers?
There is no guarantee. Major crawlers have not publicly committed to reading it. Strong structured data, clear content, and real authority matter far more.
Q: How often should I update llms.txt?
Every time you change navigation, retire collections, or launch major pages. A file pointing at 404s hurts more than it helps.
