After a Shopify release, run these eight checks: re-validate schema, audit your feed, confirm agent checkout settings, and test your AI visibility. Platform updates quietly change theme output and settings, and those shifts move your AI recommendations. Here's the list.
1. Re-validate product schema
Theme and app updates can change the structured data your pages output. Run your product pages through Google's Rich Results Test to confirm Product and Offer schema still validate. Broken schema after a release is one of the most common issues we catch.
2. Audit feed completeness
Releases sometimes reset or remap product fields. Confirm GTIN, brand, price, and availability are still populated across your catalog. A silently emptied field can drop products from AI recommendations without any obvious error.
3. Check agent checkout settings
Shopify keeps expanding agent-facing checkout support. After a release, confirm the settings that let AI agents complete a purchase are still enabled for your plan. New features often ship off by default.
4. Review metafield mappings
Metafields hold the specific attributes assistants match against. Updates can break the mapping between metafields and your feed. Verify material, size, and compatibility attributes still flow through correctly.
5. Test AI assistant visibility
Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity to shop your category the way a customer would. Do this after every major release. If a change broke your data, this is where you'll catch it fast, before it costs you weeks of citations.
6. Confirm FAQ schema still renders
FAQPage schema is a direct citation target for assistants. Confirm it still renders and validates after the update. A theme change can strip or duplicate it, which pulls you out of answer results.
7. Check for duplicate schema
App and theme overlaps often create duplicate FAQPage or Product blocks after a release. Duplicates cause search and assistants to drop both. Keep one canonical block per type.
8. Verify sitemap and lastmod
Confirm your sitemap regenerated and that lastmod dates reflect real changes. Freshness signals help assistants and search know your content is current. A stale sitemap after a release makes your updates invisible.
How We Chose This List
These are the checks that catch the most post-release breakage in our audits. Each one targets a signal that AI assistants read and that platform updates tend to disturb.
FAQ
Q: Why do Shopify releases affect AI visibility?
Releases change theme output, feed mappings, and default settings. Those control the structured data assistants read, so a release can quietly change whether you're recommended.
Q: How often should I run this audit?
After every major Shopify release, and quarterly regardless. Structured data drifts even without an update.
Q: What tool checks my schema quickly?
Google's Rich Results Test validates individual pages. For a full-catalog view, an AEO audit tool scans schema, feed, and content together.
Q: What's the highest-risk item after a release?
Duplicate or broken schema. It can silently remove you from rich results and AI answers with no visible error on your storefront.
