Before ChatGPT recommends your Shopify product, it runs through a short mental checklist. These are the eight things it checks, in roughly the order it checks them. Miss one and you can drop out of the answer, even when your product is the best fit.
Here's the bottom line. ChatGPT is matching data, not browsing your store. Give it clean fields and you pass the check.
1. Can it read your data at all?
First question: is there machine-readable data to read? ChatGPT pulls from your feed and Product schema. No structured data, no entry.
2. Does the title match the query?
It compares the shopper's words to your title. A shopper-style title with the key feature up front matches. An internal SKU name doesn't.
3. Do the attributes fit the filters?
Color, size, material, fit. The query carries these as filters, and ChatGPT checks your attribute fields for a match. Blank fields fail the filter.
4. Is the price in range?
Most shopping queries imply a budget. ChatGPT uses your price field to sort you into the right range. An accurate price keeps you in the correct set.
5. Is it in stock?
It checks availability. A recommendation that leads to a sold-out product is a bad answer, so assistants skip items that look unavailable.
6. Can it trust you?
It weighs trust signals: reviews in AggregateRating schema, consistent brand naming, and whether other sources mention you. Trust breaks ties between similar products.
7. Is your data consistent?
ChatGPT cross-checks your feed against your live page. If price or availability disagree, confidence drops and you can get left out. Keep both in sync.
8. Does your content answer the question?
For research-style queries, it favors stores with pages that answer the question in plain, quotable sentences. OpenAI describes how shopping results draw on merchant and web data in its shopping documentation.
How to pass all eight
Run one product through the list right now. Can ChatGPT read it, match it, trust it, and confirm it? Every "no" is a fix. Start with identifiers, titles, and attributes, because those clear the first three checks at once.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does ChatGPT check first?
Whether there is machine-readable data to read at all. It pulls from your product feed and Product schema, so with no structured data you never enter the comparison.
How does ChatGPT decide which product to trust?
It weighs reviews marked up in schema, consistent brand naming, and whether other sources mention you. Trust signals break ties between similar products.
What is the fastest way to pass these checks?
Fix identifiers, shopper-style titles, and attribute fields first. Those three clear the earliest and most important checks at once.
