A Shopify AI-readiness audit checks whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI can find your store, read your products, and recommend them by name. You can run the whole thing in 15 minutes with free tools. Eight checks. Each one is a simple pass or fail.
I've had a hard time getting store owners to take this seriously. It feels invisible. But AI is quietly deciding who gets recommended, and most Shopify stores are failing checks they don't even know exist. Here's the list.
1. Does your product feed have gaps?
Open your Shopify admin and pull up a handful of products. Every one needs a title, a real description, a price, an availability status, and at least one image with alt text. If products are missing descriptions or running on the theme's default text, that's a fail, because AI has nothing specific to pull. Shopify's product documentation lists every field that should be filled.
2. Is JSON-LD structured data on your pages?
Structured data is the machine-readable version of your product info, and AI relies on it heavily. Drop a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test and look for Product and Offer markup. If it comes back empty, you fail, and AI is left guessing from raw page text.
3. Do your titles and descriptions read clearly?
Read three product titles out loud. If they're stuffed with keywords or vague like "Premium Quality Item," AI can't tell what you're selling. A clear title names the product, the material, and who it's for. That's the pass signal.
4. Is your review schema actually firing?
Reviews are one of the strongest signals AI uses to recommend a store over a competitor. Run a product page through Google's Rich Results Test again and check for AggregateRating and Review markup. Stars showing on the page but no schema in the test? That's a fail. The reviews are invisible to machines.
5. Can AI crawlers even reach your store?
Go to yourstore.com/robots.txt and read it. You're looking for blocks on crawlers like GPTBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended. OpenAI documents GPTBot and how to allow or block it, and Perplexity documents PerplexityBot. If you're blocking them, you're invisible to those assistants. Simple as that.
6. Is your page fast and text-extractable?
Run your homepage and a product page through Google's PageSpeed Insights. A slow page or one where the key product info only loads through JavaScript can be skipped by crawlers entirely. If your product details don't show up when you disable JavaScript in your browser, that's a fail worth fixing.
7. Does anyone else mention your brand?
Search Google for your brand name plus "review" or "best" in your category. AI trusts stores that get mentioned on sites it already reads: blogs, roundups, Reddit, press. Zero third-party mentions means AI only has your own word to go on, and that's a weak position.
8. What happens when you actually ask the AI?
This is the real test. Open ChatGPT and Perplexity and ask them to recommend products in your category, the way a customer would. If your store never comes up, or the AI gets your details wrong, you've just found your gap. Run three or four prompts and write down exactly what it says.
How we chose these eight checks
These are the checks that map directly to how AI assistants find and cite ecommerce stores, drawn from public documentation from Shopify, Google Search Central, OpenAI, and Perplexity. We kept the list to what a store owner can verify alone in 15 minutes, with no paid tools and no developer.
FAQ
Q: What is a Shopify AI-readiness audit?
It's a quick review of whether AI assistants can find, read, and recommend your store. You check your feed, structured data, titles, review schema, crawler access, speed, off-site mentions, and how you show up in test prompts.
Q: How long does it take?
About 15 minutes if you know your store. Most checks are pass or fail, so you're not scoring anything. You're finding what's broken.
Q: Do I need paid tools?
No. Google's Rich Results Test, PageSpeed Insights, your browser, and a free ChatGPT or Perplexity account cover all eight checks. The only cost is your time.
Q: Does structured data really help AI recommend my products?
Yes. Product, Offer, and Review schema give AI clean data instead of messy page text to parse. Google's Search Central documents these types, and AI assistants lean on the same signals.
Q: How often should I re-run this?
Every quarter, or any time you change your theme, swap apps, or edit robots.txt. Theme updates break schema more often than owners expect.
