8 Checks in a 10-Minute Shopify AI-Visibility Audit

A fast Shopify AI-visibility audit comes down to eight checks: structured data, FAQ and HowTo schema, product feed completeness, an llms.txt file, meta descriptions, review schema, content freshness, and whether ChatGPT and Perplexity actually name your store. You can run every one of these in under ten minutes without a single paid tool. Here's the full list.

1. Check that structured data is present on product pages

Open any product page, right-click, view source, and search for "application/ld+json." If you find a Product block with name, price, and availability, you pass. If you find nothing, AI assistants are reading your page as plain text and guessing, and Google's Product structured data docs show exactly what that block should contain.

2. Confirm FAQ and HowTo schema on key pages

Your top collection pages and your biggest product pages should answer real questions in FAQPage markup. AI pulls these answers straight into its responses, word for word. A HowTo block does the same thing for setup or sizing steps. No FAQ schema means you handed that citation to a competitor who wrote one.

3. Audit product feed completeness

Pull up five random products and check for a title, a full description, a price, an image, and stock status on each. Missing descriptions are the most common gap I see, and a blank description gives AI nothing to repeat. Shopify's own product docs walk through every field that belongs on a listing. A complete feed is the difference between "they have running shoes" and "they have the Pegasus 41 in wide sizes for $140."

4. Look for an llms.txt file

Type your domain followed by /llms.txt into a browser. This file is a plain-text map that tells AI crawlers what your site is and where your best content lives, and the llms.txt spec explains the format in two minutes. If you get a 404, you're missing a cheap, direct line to the models.

5. Read your meta descriptions out loud

Google your store name, look at the gray text under each result, and read it like a human would. If it's a pile of keywords instead of a real sentence, AI treats it the same way a shopper does and skips it. One clear sentence per page beats ten stuffed keywords. Write it for the shopper, and the machine reads it fine too.

6. Verify review schema is firing

Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test and look for AggregateRating or Review in the output. Star ratings are one of the strongest signals AI uses to decide which store to recommend. If your reviews live only inside a widget's JavaScript, the crawler often can't see them at all.

7. Check dateModified and content freshness

Open your source again and look for a "dateModified" field, then ask yourself when that page was actually touched. AI leans toward fresh content, so a buying guide stamped two years ago loses to one updated last month. Freshness isn't about rewriting everything. It's about proving the page is still alive.

8. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity if they mention your store

Open ChatGPT and Perplexity and ask them to recommend stores for the exact thing you sell. If your name doesn't come up, you know where you stand, and OpenAI's own platform docs confirm these tools pull from live, structured web data. This is the one check that tells you the truth. Everything else is the work that changes the answer.

How We Chose These Checks

Every check on this list runs in under two minutes, needs no paid software, and maps to a signal AI assistants actually use to find and recommend Shopify stores. We built it from audits we run on live merchant stores every week.

FAQ

Q: How long does a Shopify AI-visibility audit take?

All eight checks take about ten minutes if you move fast. None of them require a developer or a paid tool.

Q: What's the single most important check?

Structured data on product pages. If AI can't read your products as structured data, nothing else on this list matters.

Q: Do I need to code any of this myself?

No. Most Shopify themes and a few free apps handle schema, and the audit itself is just viewing source and asking a couple of AI tools a question.

Q: Why does it matter if ChatGPT mentions my store?

Because shoppers are asking AI what to buy before they ever reach Google. If AI doesn't know your store exists, you're invisible at the exact moment someone's ready to buy.
