The most common ChatGPT Shopping mistakes are treating the feed as a Google-only chore, trusting default theme schema, and never testing in the assistant. Stores do the steps and still stay invisible because of these gaps. This follows up on our guide to the 9 steps to get Shopify products into ChatGPT Shopping results. Here's what goes wrong.
1. Treating the feed as a Google-only task
Stores build the feed once for Google Shopping and forget it. ChatGPT reads the same structured data, so a neglected feed means neglected AI visibility. Audit it for AI, not just Google.
2. Skipping GTINs on house brands
Owners assume house brands don't need a GTIN. Assistants still use identifiers to verify products, and a blank GTIN reads as unconfirmed. Assign identifiers to every SKU.
3. Relying on theme default schema
Many themes ship partial or missing Product schema. Stores assume it's handled and never check. Validate your pages in Google's Rich Results Test instead of trusting the theme.
4. Writing marketing copy instead of answers
Clever product copy doesn't give ChatGPT quotable facts. It wants specifics: what it's for, who it fits, what it's made of. Lead with the answer, then the personality.
5. Ignoring third-party corroboration
Stores optimize their own pages and stop there. ChatGPT weights outside mentions, reviews, and roundups. Without corroboration, your own claims carry little weight in a recommendation.
6. Letting availability go stale
An availability field that lags real stock makes ChatGPT treat your listing as unreliable. Sync it in real time. This one silently kills recommendations with no visible error.
7. Duplicating schema across apps
Multiple apps injecting FAQPage or Product schema create duplicates. Assistants and search drop both when they conflict. Keep one canonical block per type.
8. Never testing in the assistant
The biggest miss. Stores do the work and never actually ask ChatGPT to shop their category. Test it. If you're not in the answer, you have your fix list. We do this on every store we audit.
How We Chose This List
These are the recurring mistakes we see after stores follow the standard steps and still don't appear. Each one is a gap between doing the task and doing it in a way ChatGPT actually reads.
FAQ
Q: I followed the steps and still don't show in ChatGPT. Why?
Usually default theme schema, a stale feed, or no third-party corroboration. Doing the steps isn't enough if the data isn't clean and verified.
Q: How do I check if my schema is actually working?
Run your product pages through Google's Rich Results Test and confirm Product and Offer validate with no duplicates.
Q: Does ChatGPT really use outside reviews?
Yes. Corroboration across independent sources raises confidence in a recommendation. Your own site claims carry less weight alone.
Q: How often should I test in ChatGPT?
After every major store or platform change, and at least monthly. It's the fastest way to catch a broken signal.
