The fastest answer engine optimization wins are the ones that make your page easy for an AI to quote: FAQ schema, question headings, and a direct one-sentence answer under each one. All eight fixes below are edits to pages you already own. No new platform, no developer sprint. You can ship every one of them in a week.
I've had a hard time with AEO advice because most of it is theory. This isn't. This is the exact list I'd hand my own team on a Monday, and it's the same work we run for our own clients every week.
Here's the bottom line. You don't need a new platform or a six-month project. You need to make the pages you already have easy for a machine to read, trust, and quote.
1. Add FAQPage schema to your key pages
FAQPage schema tells AI engines exactly which question each block answers, in a format they already parse. Google Search Central documents the full spec, and the markup is just JSON-LD you paste into the page head. Start with your top five pages by traffic and ship it today.
2. Rewrite your headings as questions
People ask AI full questions, not keywords. Change "Pricing" to "How much does it cost?" and your heading now matches the query. This one costs you nothing but ten minutes of find-and-replace.
3. Put a direct 1-2 sentence answer under each heading
This is the win. Under every question heading, write the answer in one or two plain sentences before anything else. That block is the exact text an AI lifts and cites. Bury the answer three paragraphs down and it gets skipped.
4. Fix your entity and NAP consistency
Your name, address, and phone number need to match everywhere: your site, your Google profile, your social pages. AI systems cross-check these to decide if you're a real, trusted entity. One wrong suite number tells the machine you might be two different companies, and it hedges by citing someone else. Pick one exact format and fix every page that drifts from it.
5. Add real author bios
Content from a named expert with credentials beats anonymous content. Add a short bio with the author's real experience to every page. Google's own guidance on helpful content leans hard on experience and expertise, and AI engines read the same signals.
6. Add 2-3 authoritative citations per page
Pages that cite named, trusted sources get treated as more trustworthy themselves. Link out to the primary source two or three times per page: the schema.org spec, a government stat, a published study. A 2024 arXiv study on retrieval-augmented systems found that answer engines favor content that is well-grounded in citations.
7. Build one comparison page
"X vs Y" is one of the most common things people ask AI. A clean comparison page, with a table and a direct verdict, hands the engine a ready-made answer. You only need one to start, and it tends to get cited far above its weight. Compare yourself against the alternative your buyers already name out loud.
8. Add a glossary or definition block
AI loves a crisp definition it can quote word for word. Add a short "What is [term]?" block that defines the key terms in your space in one sentence each. These definition blocks get pulled into answers constantly because they're already written the way a machine wants to read them. Keep each one to a single sentence and lead with the term itself.
How We Chose This List
Every win here is something a two-person team can ship in a week without new software or a developer sprint. We ranked them by speed to ship against likelihood of getting cited, based on how AI assistants actually pull and quote source pages.
FAQ
What is answer engine optimization?
It's the work of structuring your content so AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity quote and cite your pages when they answer a question. Think of it as SEO for the AI answer box.
Can you really see AEO results in one week?
You can ship the fixes in a week. The citations follow over the next few weeks as AI systems recrawl and re-index your updated pages.
What is the single most important AEO win?
Put a direct one to two sentence answer right under each question heading. That block is the exact text AI assistants lift and cite.
Do I need new software to do this?
No. Every win on this list is an edit to pages you already own. You need a text editor and access to your CMS. That's it.
