Eight AEO mistakes quietly hurt Shopify stores: burying the answer, thin product data, no structured markup, brand-only titles, no FAQ content, ignoring reviews, stale pages, and blocking crawlers. Each one is small on its own. Stacked together, they make you invisible to AI.
None of these will show up as an error in your dashboard. That's what makes them dangerous. Here's the list I check first.
1. Burying the answer
AI cites the sentence that answers the question, not the paragraph of setup before it. If your pages open with brand story instead of a direct answer, the model has nothing clean to quote. Put the answer in the first two sentences.
2. Thin product data
Missing attributes are the top reason AI skips a product. Empty material, size, or GTIN fields read as an incomplete listing. Fill every core field across the whole catalog, not just your bestsellers.
3. No structured markup
Without Product, Offer, and FAQPage schema, machines read your pages as undifferentiated text. Schema turns your content into facts AI can extract. Validate it with Google's Rich Results Test.
4. Brand-only product titles
"The Nomad" tells an AI nothing. "Waterproof Leather Weekender Bag" tells it everything. Clever titles that hide the product can't match a shopper's request, so they lose to plainer competitors.
5. No FAQ content
FAQ sections are pure citation fuel — direct questions with direct answers, exactly the format AI pulls from. Stores without them leave easy citations on the table. Add three to five real buyer questions per key page.
6. Ignoring reviews
Reviews without AggregateRating markup are invisible to AI even when they're right there on the page. Structured review data gives the model quotable proof. Skipping it wastes social proof you already earned.
7. Stale pages
Search-grounded assistants favor current content. A page dated two years ago with no updates signals irrelevance. Refresh key pages and let dateModified reflect real changes, per Google's structured data guidance.
8. Blocking crawlers
An overzealous robots.txt or heavy client-side rendering can hide your best pages from AI crawlers entirely. Confirm your important pages are actually reachable and rendered before AI ever gets to judge them.
How we chose this list
These eight come from auditing real Shopify stores and mapping which gaps most often kept them out of AI answers. We ranked them by frequency and impact — the mistakes at the top show up on nearly every underperforming store we've reviewed. Fix the first three and most stores see the biggest jump.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most common AEO mistake Shopify stores make?
Burying the answer. AI cites the sentence that directly answers a question, so pages that open with brand story instead of a clear answer give the model nothing clean to quote.
Why does thin product data hurt AI visibility?
Missing attributes like material, size, or GTIN make a listing look incomplete, and incomplete listings are the top reason AI skips a product when matching shopper requests.
Which AEO mistakes should I fix first?
Start with the top three: put a direct answer up top, fill in complete product data, and add structured markup. These show up on nearly every underperforming store and deliver the biggest jump.
