To get your Shopify products recommended by ChatGPT, give it complete product data, valid schema, and content it can extract cleanly. ChatGPT recommends what it can read and match to a shopper's question.
Most stores I audit are invisible to ChatGPT because their data is thin, not because their products are weak. Here are seven fixes that move the needle.
1. Fill every product feed field
Title, description, brand, material, color, size, gender, age group, price, and availability, on every variant. Blank fields are lost matches. Google's product data spec is the checklist. Start with your top revenue products.
2. Add complete Product schema
Put valid Product JSON-LD on every product page with real price and availability inside it, not an empty shell. The Product schema spec is the standard. I've seen valid markup with a blank price field. Useless to AI.
3. Write specific, descriptive titles
Swap vague titles for ones that name who it's for and what it does, like "Men's Waterproof Insulated Winter Jacket." A title like "Blue Jacket" answers no real buyer question. Detail is what earns the match.
4. Cut boilerplate so content is extractable
Reduce navigation, popups, and app scripts so your substantive product copy dominates the page. Content extractability is the most common failure in my audits. Dense, answerable copy wins the citation.
5. Connect your Shopify catalog to OpenAI
Where supported, turn on the Shopify catalog connection so your product data can reach ChatGPT's shopping results. Fix the feed first. A pipe only carries what you put in it, and a half-empty catalog stays half-empty.
6. Add FAQ content with question headings
Answer real buyer questions on your pages with a direct response in the first one to two sentences, backed by FAQPage schema. This is the exact format AI extracts and cites. It's a fast win most stores skip.
7. Keep price and availability accurate in real time
AI drops products with stale or wrong pricing and stock. Accurate offers keep you eligible to be recommended. An assistant that can't trust your availability won't put you in front of a buyer ready to purchase.
How We Chose These Methods
Each method maps to a specific signal ChatGPT uses to read and rank products: data completeness, structured markup, extractable content, and accurate offers. They're ordered by speed and impact from my own store audits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ChatGPT recommend products from any Shopify store?
Yes, there's no paid gate. ChatGPT recommends products it can read and match to a query, so complete data and clean schema decide inclusion, not store size.
How fast will I show up in ChatGPT after these fixes?
Feed and schema changes must be recrawled and synced first, which usually takes days to a few weeks. It's a prerequisite, not an instant switch.
Do I need the Shopify catalog connection to appear in ChatGPT?
It helps as a direct data path, but complete product data, schema, and extractable content matter first. Fix those before relying on the connection.
How do I know if ChatGPT can see my products?
Ask it. Describe a shopper looking for what you sell across five real buyer questions and note where you appear or fall out. Re-test after your fixes.
