What do Shopify stores actually need to fix before agentic checkout goes live?
Seven things: structured product data, a clean feed, agent-readable pricing and stock, a machine-readable return policy, delegated payment support, accurate real-time inventory, and clear checkout permissions. Fix those and an AI agent can buy from you. Skip them and the agent skips you.
Agentic checkout is already here. Shopify turned on support for the Agentic Commerce Protocol and Universal Cart, which lets agents like ChatGPT complete a purchase inside the chat. ChatGPT alone has over 800 million weekly users, and now some of them can buy without ever opening your site. The store still has to be ready. Here's the list.
1. Fix your structured product data
Agents read Product schema, not your pretty theme. Mark up every product with name, price, availability, and variants using Schema.org Product so an agent can parse what you sell. No structured data means the agent guesses, and a guessing agent moves on to the next store.
2. Clean up your product feed
Your feed is the source of truth for every machine buyer. Missing GTINs, blank variant titles, and stale prices are the top reasons a product gets dropped from agent results. Audit your feed against the Google Merchant Center product data spec and kill every error before launch. One bad field can pull a whole product offline.
3. Make pricing and availability agent-readable
An agent needs the exact price and stock status in a format it can trust, not "contact us" or a price baked into an image. Expose price, currency, and availability in your structured data and feed so the number the agent sees matches the number at checkout. Mismatched pricing is an instant abandoned cart.
4. Publish a machine-readable return and shipping policy
Agents factor returns and shipping into what they recommend, the same way a careful shopper does. Add MerchantReturnPolicy and shipping details markup so your 30-day returns and free shipping threshold show up in the agent's answer. Clear policy data is a reason to pick you over a competitor with none.
5. Turn on delegated payment support
Agentic checkout runs on payment tokens, not stored card numbers. The Agentic Commerce Protocol from OpenAI and Stripe uses a shared payment token so the agent can pay you without ever handling raw card data. If your payment setup can't accept a delegated token, the order dies at the last step. The agent read your product, picked it, and still couldn't pay you. That's the worst place to lose a sale.
6. Get your inventory counts accurate in real time
Nothing kills agent trust faster than selling something you don't have. When an agent buys an out-of-stock item, the order fails, the refund follows, and the model learns to stop recommending you. Sync inventory in real time across every channel so stock counts are right the second an agent checks. A failed order is not just a lost sale. It's a lost recommendation.
7. Set clear checkout permissions and guardrails
Decide what an agent is allowed to do in your store before it does it. Set rules for order limits, approved payment methods, and which products are eligible so a buying agent stays inside boundaries you control. OpenAI's agentic commerce docs spell out the merchant controls. Use them.
How we chose this list
These seven are the fixes we run on every Shopify store we audit for agentic readiness at WRKNG Digital, ranked by how often each one is the thing that breaks a test order. Data, payments, and inventory fail first. That's where we start.
FAQ
Q: What is agentic checkout readiness for Shopify?
It means your data, payments, and policies are structured so an AI agent can read your products, confirm price and stock, and complete a purchase for a shopper without a human clicking a single button.
Q: Does Shopify already support agentic checkout?
Yes. Shopify supports the Agentic Commerce Protocol and Universal Cart, so agents like ChatGPT can buy from Shopify stores. Your store still needs clean data and delegated payments turned on for it to work.
Q: What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?
It's an open standard from OpenAI and Stripe that lets AI agents place orders and pay merchants with a secure payment token instead of raw card data.
Q: What breaks agentic checkout most often?
Bad product data and wrong inventory counts. If the agent can't read the price, variant, and stock, or it buys something you don't have, the order fails and the agent stops recommending you.
