Before an AI agent can check out for a customer, your Shopify store needs accurate real-time inventory and pricing, machine-readable product data, clear shipping and return policies, a supported agentic checkout flow, trust signals, clean SKUs, and structured post-purchase info. Miss one of those and the agent either stalls or places an order it can't fulfill. Here's the full list.
I've had a hard time convincing store owners this is real. It is. OpenAI and Stripe shipped the Agentic Commerce Protocol in 2025, and Shopify plugged into it. The buy button is moving off your site.
1. Accurate real-time inventory and pricing
An AI agent will place an order the second a customer says yes. If your inventory count or price is stale, the agent sells something you don't have or charges the wrong amount, and the order fails at fulfillment. Shopify tracks inventory at the variant level through its Admin API, so the data is there. Your job is making sure it's actually current across every location.
2. Machine-readable product data and variants
Agents don't read your product page. They read the feed. That means every variant needs a clear title, price, size, color, and availability exposed in structured form through Shopify's product data and Product schema. A shirt with "small, medium, large" spelled out beats a store where the size lives only in a photo.
3. Clear shipping, returns, and policy data
An agent has to answer the customer's questions before it buys. Shipping cost, delivery window, and return window all need to be written in plain, findable text, not buried in a graphic. Shopify gives you policy pages for exactly this. Fill them out. An agent that can't confirm your return policy will pick the competitor that spelled theirs out.
4. Supported agentic or instant checkout
This is the one most stores are missing. The agent needs a checkout it can actually complete, which means connecting to the Agentic Commerce Protocol from OpenAI and Stripe or Shopify's own instant checkout paths. Without a supported flow, the agent can recommend your product all day and never close the sale. The transaction dies at the last step.
5. Trust signals and product reviews
Agents weigh trust the same way a careful shopper does. Product reviews, ratings, and clear return terms give an agent a reason to pick your listing over an identical one. Shopify supports review apps that output AggregateRating schema, which is the machine-readable version of "other people bought this and liked it." No signal, no confidence, no sale.
6. Unambiguous SKUs and product identifiers
One product, one identity. If two variants share a SKU or a GTIN is missing, the agent can't be sure what it's buying, and it'll skip the risk. Google Merchant Center already rejects feeds with duplicate or missing identifiers, and agents apply the same logic. Clean SKUs and real GTINs are the difference between "add to cart" and "can't confirm this item."
7. Structured post-purchase information
The sale isn't done when the order goes through. The agent needs to hand back an order confirmation, a tracking number, and a return path the customer can act on. Shopify's order and fulfillment data covers this, but only if your tracking and confirmation info flows through in a structured format the agent can read and repeat. Loose ends here turn a smooth purchase into a support ticket.
How we chose this list
These seven come straight from the technical requirements of the Agentic Commerce Protocol and Shopify's own agentic commerce docs, cross-checked against what actually breaks when an agent tries to buy. Each one is a point where a purchase either completes or falls apart.
FAQ
What is agentic checkout readiness on Shopify?
It means your Shopify store can let an AI agent finish a purchase for a customer. That takes accurate real-time inventory and pricing, machine-readable product data, clear policies, and a supported agentic checkout flow like the Agentic Commerce Protocol from OpenAI and Stripe.
What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?
It's an open standard from OpenAI and Stripe that lets an AI agent complete a purchase inside a chat while you stay the seller of record. Shopify merchants can connect to it so an agent places a real order without the shopper ever visiting the storefront.
Do I need structured data for AI agents to buy from my store?
Yes. Agents read feeds and structured data, not your page design. Shopify exposes product, variant, price, and availability data through its APIs, and adding Product and Offer schema makes that data easier for an agent to parse.
Will agentic checkout replace my Shopify checkout?
No. It runs alongside your normal checkout. Human shoppers keep buying the way they always have. Agentic checkout just adds a second path where an AI agent can close the sale.
