What does a Shopify AI commerce audit actually check?
A Shopify AI commerce audit checks seven things: product structured data, feed field completeness, FAQ and definition blocks, entity consistency across your JSON-LD, crawlability and llms.txt, content extractability, and review signals. Together these decide whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI can read your store and recommend your products by name.
Most Shopify stores I look at are invisible to AI. Not because the products are bad. Because the machine can't read them. I've watched stores with real revenue get skipped entirely while a weaker competitor gets named in the answer. The difference was never the product. It was the plumbing. Here's what a real audit inspects, and why each one moves the needle.
1. Product structured data (Product JSON-LD)
This is the first thing checked, because it's the thing most stores get wrong. The audit verifies that every product page ships valid Product schema with price, availability, currency, and a stable identifier. Google's own product structured data docs spell out the required fields, and a missing one is enough for a model to skip your product and cite a competitor.
2. Feed field completeness
AI shopping answers pull from product feeds, not just page HTML. The audit scores how many of your feed fields are filled in: GTIN, brand, condition, size, color, material. Google's product data specification treats those as ranking and eligibility signals, and a half-empty feed reads as a half-real product.
3. FAQ and definition blocks for AEO
Models cite clean, self-contained answers. The audit looks for FAQ blocks and one-sentence definitions on product and collection pages, marked up with FAQPage schema. When a shopper asks "is this waterproof" or "does this fit a toddler," the store that already answered that in extractable text is the one that gets quoted.
4. Entity consistency across JSON-LD
Your brand name, product name, and organization details have to match everywhere. The audit cross-checks your Organization, Product, and BreadcrumbList schema for the same spelling, the same URLs, the same IDs. AI systems build an entity graph, and one store listed under three slightly different names splits its own authority.
5. Crawlability and llms.txt
If the crawler can't reach the page, nothing else matters. The audit checks robots rules, render-blocking scripts, and whether an llms.txt file points AI to your key product and policy pages in clean text. OpenAI's bots documentation lists the crawlers you need to allow, and blocking them by accident is a common, quiet catalog killer.
6. Content extractability
The audit strips your product page down to what a model sees: raw text, no styling. If your specs live inside an image, a tab that loads on click, or a review widget in an iframe, the machine reads a blank. Extractable content is plain text a model can lift in one pass. The audit flags every spec, price, and shipping detail that hides behind JavaScript or lives only in a graphic. If a shopper's AI can't read it, that fact doesn't exist. That's the whole test.
7. Review and AggregateRating signals
Ratings are trust, and trust is what AI weighs before it recommends. The audit confirms your reviews render in valid AggregateRating schema with a real count and average, following Google's review snippet guidelines. A product with 400 marked-up reviews gets recommended over a better product with zero readable ones. Every time.
How we chose these seven
These are the checkpoints that map directly to what ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI pull when they answer a shopping question. We prioritized signals that are machine-read and store-owned, so fixing them is inside your control, not a bidding war.
FAQ
Q: What is an AI commerce audit for Shopify?
It's a review of how well AI assistants can read, trust, and recommend your store. It checks your structured data, product feed, review signals, and crawlability against what those systems actually pull to answer shopping questions.
Q: How is an AI commerce audit different from an SEO audit?
An SEO audit tries to rank a page in a list of links. An AI commerce audit checks whether a model can extract a clean fact about your product and cite it in a written answer. That depends more on structured data than on backlinks.
Q: Do I need an llms.txt file for my Shopify store?
It helps. It points AI crawlers to your most important product and policy pages in clean text, which raises the odds those pages get read and cited. It doesn't replace valid Product schema. It removes friction.
Q: How often should I run an AI commerce audit?
Every quarter, plus after any theme change, catalog migration, or app install that touches your product templates. Those changes break structured data more often than anything else.
