Seven Shopify settings decide whether AI assistants can discover and recommend you: sales channel connections, schema, metafields, feed sync, image alt text, checkout, and content blocks. Most stores have never checked them. Here's the audit.
1. Sales Channel Connections
Confirm your products feed into the channels that pass data to AI platforms, including the Shopify Catalog connection. If the connection is off, AI assistants may never see your catalog. Check it in your admin under sales channels.
2. Structured Data and Schema
Verify your theme outputs valid Product, Review, and FAQ schema. Google's structured data documentation is the standard, and the same markup helps AI assistants parse your pages. Test a few pages to catch theme errors.
3. Product Metafields
Metafields hold the extra attributes AI assistants use to match specific queries: material, compatibility, dimensions, use case. Empty metafields mean missed matches. Fill them on your bestsellers first.
4. Feed Sync Frequency
Check how often your product feed updates. Daily is the floor, and stores with frequent price changes need more. Price and stock that lag your live site get products dropped from AI answers.
5. Image Alt Text
Audit alt text on product images. Visual AI uses it for context, and empty alt attributes leave the model blind. This is one of the most common gaps we flag, and one of the fastest to fix.
6. Shop Pay and Checkout
Enable Shop Pay so AI shopping agents have a structured checkout path. Shopify's Shop Pay docs cover setup. The same setting lifts human conversion, so there's no reason to leave it off.
7. Content and FAQ Blocks
Add FAQ and buying-guide content with proper schema to your key pages. AI assistants cite direct answers, and these blocks are easy citation targets. A store with no citable content shows up for nothing beyond the product match.
How We Chose This List
We built this audit from the settings that most often block AI discovery in live Shopify stores. Each one is something you control in your admin or theme, and we ordered them by impact.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Shopify setting most affects AI discovery?
Your sales channel and catalog connections. If products don't feed into the channels that pass data to AI platforms, assistants can't discover or recommend them at all.
Do metafields help with AI shopping visibility?
Yes. Metafields store the extra attributes AI assistants use to match specific buying queries, so filling them expands the range of searches your products can win.
How do I check my store's structured data?
Run key pages through Google's Rich Results Test to confirm Product, Review, and FAQ schema output correctly, then fix any theme errors it surfaces.
