Which Shopify settings decide whether AI can read your store?
Your product data, your structured data, your theme's HTML output, and a handful of technical basics. Most of them are one afternoon of work.
None of these require a developer or a plugin you don't have. Here are the seven that move the needle.
1. Complete product fields
Fill title, description, price, availability, vendor, and product type on every product. These are the facts an AI reads first, and blanks are the fastest way to get skipped.
On Shopify these live right in the product editor. Start there.
2. Product metafields for attributes
Use metafields to store attributes like material, dimensions, and use case that don't have a default field. These give a model precise facts to match against a shopper's request.
Map them into your theme and schema so they're actually visible, not just stored.
3. Structured data output in your theme
Check whether your theme emits real Product schema with filled values, not an empty skeleton. Many themes output the tags but leave price and availability blank.
Validate a product template with the Schema.org validator and fix what's empty.
4. Meta titles and descriptions
Set clear, specific meta titles and descriptions instead of leaving them to auto-generate. They're a compact summary a model uses to place your page.
Make each one describe the actual product or page, not your tagline.
5. Clean URL and handle structure
Readable handles help both search engines and models understand a page at a glance. A slug like /products/merino-hiking-socks beats a string of numbers.
Avoid changing handles often, since that breaks links and resets trust.
6. Image alt text
Descriptive alt text gives a model context for your product images and helps accessibility at the same time. Empty alt attributes waste a signal you already have.
Write alt text that names the product and its key attribute, not "image1."
7. Sitemap and page freshness
Shopify generates a sitemap automatically, so make sure new and updated products actually make it in and carry a current lastmod. Fresh signals help engines recrawl your changes.
Keep discontinued products cleaned up so the model isn't reading dead listings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an app to make Shopify readable to AI?
Usually not. Most of the work is completing product fields, using metafields for attributes, and making sure your theme outputs filled schema. Those are built-in settings, not add-ons.
Does my Shopify theme affect AI visibility?
Yes. The theme controls how much boilerplate wraps your content and whether it outputs real structured data. Two stores on different themes can be readable or unreadable based on that output.
Will these settings help my SEO too?
Yes. Clean fields, structured data, good meta descriptions, and alt text help classic search and AI visibility together, so you're not choosing between them.
Which setting should I fix first?
Start with complete product data, since it's the foundation everything else builds on. Then validate your schema output, because empty schema is the most common silent failure.
