7 Product Feed Fields That Decide Whether AI Recommends Your Shopify Store

Seven product feed fields decide whether AI recommends your Shopify store: title, unique identifiers, attributes, description, price and availability, category, and images with alt text. Get these right and AI can match your products to a shopper's question. Get them wrong and your catalog is invisible. Here's what each field does and how to fix it.

We audited 2,400 products this year. Only 11% had the data AI needs to recommend them. The gaps were almost always in these seven fields.

1. Product Title

Your title is the first thing AI reads to understand a product. Put the brand, product type, and one or two key attributes in it. "Merino Wool Base Layer, Men's, Black" beats "The Adventurer." Clarity wins over cleverness here.

2. Unique Identifiers (GTIN, MPN, Brand)

Identifiers let AI confirm exactly which product you're selling and cross-check it. Missing GTINs are the most common gap I see. Google's unique product identifier rules spell out what to include.

3. Product Attributes

Color, size, material, and fit are how AI narrows a recommendation to the right item. Fill every relevant attribute. A shopper asking for a "waterproof black jacket in large" only gets matched if those attributes exist in your data.

4. Description

The description gives AI context beyond the specs. Write it for a human, cover the use case, and answer the obvious questions. Thin descriptions leave AI guessing, and AI doesn't recommend what it can't understand.

5. Price and Availability

AI won't recommend an out-of-stock or mispriced product. Keep availability and price accurate and current. Stale data here quietly drops you out of results, especially in agentic shopping flows.

6. Category and Product Type

Category tells AI where your product lives in the world. Use both Shopify's product type and a standard category taxonomy. This helps AI place you against the right competitors when a shopper asks a category question.

7. Images and Alt Text

AI shopping increasingly reads images and their alt text. Clear photos and descriptive alt text confirm what the product is. Blank alt text is a missed signal. Fill it with a plain description of the item.

How We Chose These Fields

We ranked by how directly each field affects an AI match. Title and identifiers come first because they confirm what the product is. The rest refine the match. Fix them in this order for the fastest gain.

FAQ

Which feed field matters most for AI?

The product title matters most because it's the first signal AI reads. A clear title with brand, type, and key attributes gives AI the fastest path to understanding your product.

Do I need GTINs for AI to recommend my products?

Identifiers like GTIN and MPN help AI confirm and cross-check your products, which improves recommendation confidence. For branded resale items they matter a lot. For unique handmade goods, brand and clear attributes carry more weight.

How do I check my Shopify feed for these gaps?

Export your product feed and scan for empty attribute, identifier, and description fields. A feed audit tool or an AEO agency can flag the gaps across your whole catalog at once.

Does alt text really affect AI recommendations?

Yes. AI shopping tools read images and alt text to confirm what a product is. Descriptive alt text adds a signal that blank alt text throws away.
