The product feed attributes that win AI shopping recommendations are GTIN/MPN, accurate price and availability, detailed product_type and category, high-quality images, structured descriptions, brand, and condition plus shipping. Get those seven right and AI assistants can actually find, trust, and recommend your product. Here's the full breakdown.
I've had a hard time getting this through to store owners. They obsess over the storefront and ignore the feed. But the feed is what the machine reads. Not your homepage.
1. GTIN and MPN Identifiers
GTIN and MPN are the unique product codes that let an AI match your item to a known product and compare it against every competitor. Without them, the assistant can't confirm what you're selling, so it plays it safe and skips you. Fix it in Shopify by filling the Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN) field on every variant. Google Merchant Center treats GTINs as a core signal for matching.
2. Accurate Price and Availability
Price and availability are the fastest way to get pulled from a recommendation. If your feed says "in stock" and the checkout says sold out, AI assistants stop trusting the whole feed. Set real inventory tracking in Shopify and let the Google & YouTube channel sync price and stock automatically. Google's price and availability rules require the feed to match the landing page.
3. Detailed product_type and Google Category
Category data tells AI where your product lives, so a "running shoe" gets recommended for running, not just "footwear." Vague or missing categories mean your product floats in a bucket no assistant reaches for. In Shopify, set the Google product category and a specific product_type in the Google & YouTube channel. Use the full Google product taxonomy, not a top-level guess.
4. High-Quality Images
Images are the first thing an AI shopping assistant shows a buyer, and low-quality ones get downranked or rejected outright. Blurry, watermarked, or placeholder shots signal a low-quality listing. Upload clean, high-resolution product images on a plain background in Shopify, and set a real main image, not a lifestyle collage. Google's image requirements spell out the exact rules.
5. Structured Descriptions and Attributes
Structured attributes like color, size, material, and gender let AI answer specific questions, and specific answers win the recommendation. A wall of marketing copy with no fields gives the assistant nothing to parse. In Shopify, use variant options and metafields to feed color, size, and material as their own attributes. Back it with Schema.org Product markup on the product page so the same data is readable on-site.
6. Brand
Brand lets AI group your product with a maker buyers already search for, and missing brand data drops you out of "best [brand] for X" style answers. It also helps the assistant tell a real product from a generic one. Set the Brand field on every product in Shopify's Google & YouTube channel. Google requires a brand for nearly every category.
7. Condition and Shipping
Condition and shipping close the loop on whether an AI can actually recommend a purchase. An assistant won't push a product it can't confirm is new, deliverable, and priced with real shipping. Set condition to "new" (or the correct value) and configure Shopify shipping profiles so rates flow into the feed. Shopify's Google channel guide walks through the shipping and condition setup.
How We Chose This List
These seven come from the attributes Google Merchant Center and AI shopping assistants weight most when matching and ranking products. We ordered them by how often a missing or wrong value gets a product skipped entirely across live Shopify stores.
FAQ
Q: What are product feed attributes for AI recommendations?
They're the structured fields in your product feed, like GTIN, price, availability, and images, that AI shopping assistants read to decide which products to recommend.
Q: Which product feed attribute matters most for AI shopping?
GTIN and MPN. They let AI match your product to a known item and compare it against every other listing. Without them, your product often gets skipped.
Q: How do I fix my product feed in Shopify?
Fill in the barcode and GTIN fields, set real inventory and prices, add Google product categories, upload clean images, and structure your descriptions. Shopify's Google & YouTube channel maps these fields straight to the Merchant Center feed.
Q: Does image quality affect AI product recommendations?
Yes. AI assistants and Merchant Center reject or downrank low-resolution, watermarked, or placeholder images. Clean product shots keep your products eligible.
