7 AI Commerce Terms Shopify Owners Keep Getting Wrong

Half the confusion about AI and ecommerce comes from mixed-up vocabulary. Get a term wrong and you do the wrong work. Here are seven that Shopify owners keep getting wrong.

Clear definitions save you from optimizing for the wrong thing.

Why do these terms matter for a store?

Because each one points to a different task. Confuse them and you spend hours on work that doesn't move the outcome you actually wanted.

1. AEO is not SEO

SEO works to rank in a list of links. AEO works to get cited inside an AI answer, in line with how AI Overviews respond. They share groundwork but chase different outcomes: a click versus a mention.

2. Agentic commerce is not just chatbots

A chatbot answers questions. An agent browses, decides, and can check out on a shopper's behalf, which is what Shopify's Agentic Commerce Protocol work enables. The difference is action, not conversation.

3. Structured data is not metadata

Metadata describes a page. Structured data like Product markup describes a thing, in a format a machine can verify. AI trusts the second one to confirm what you sell.

4. A product feed is not your catalog

Your catalog is what shoppers browse. Your feed is the structured export machines read, governed by specs like the Google Merchant specification. A clean storefront can still have a broken feed.

5. Being indexed is not being cited

Indexed means a crawler found your page. Cited means an assistant named you in an answer. You can be indexed everywhere and cited nowhere, which is where a lot of stores sit.

6. A recommendation is not an ad

When ChatGPT shopping names a store organically, that's earned, based on readable data. It isn't a paid placement, at least not yet. Confusing the two leads you to wait for an ad product instead of earning the mention now.

7. Visibility is not readability

A store can be visible to shoppers and unreadable to machines. AI visibility depends on whether a model can parse and verify your data, which is a different bar than looking good to a human.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO works to rank in a list of links; AEO works to get cited inside an AI-generated answer. They share technical groundwork like structured data, but they chase different outcomes, a click versus a mention.

Is agentic commerce the same as a chatbot?

No. A chatbot answers questions, while an agent browses, decides, and can complete checkout on a shopper's behalf. Agentic commerce is about action taken for the shopper, not conversation.

Does being indexed mean AI will cite my store?

No. Indexed means a crawler found your page; cited means an assistant named you in an answer. Plenty of stores are indexed everywhere and cited nowhere because their data isn't readable or verifiable enough.
