To be ready for agentic checkout in 2026, your Shopify store needs seven things: clean product data, structured pricing and availability, machine-readable policies, guest and agent checkout enabled, Agentic Commerce Protocol support, accurate inventory, and trust signals an AI can actually read. Miss any one of them and the agent buys from a competitor instead. Here's the full list.
I've had a hard time getting people to care about this until they see the checkout happen without a human touching it. Then it clicks.
1. Clean, Complete Product Data
An agent can't buy what it can't understand. Every product needs a clear title, a real description, correct variants, and Schema.org Product markup so a machine reads it the same way a person does. If your titles are inconsistent and your descriptions are thin, the agent skips you and moves on.
2. Structured Pricing and Real-Time Availability
Pricing has to be exact and current, marked up with Offer and price fields the agent can pull without scraping your page. Sale prices, currency, and stock status all need to match what the shopper actually gets at checkout. A mismatch here kills the transaction, because an agent won't complete a purchase it isn't sure about. The price it quotes the shopper has to be the exact price it pays, or the whole flow stops cold.
3. Machine-Readable Policies
Shipping, returns, and refund terms can't live only in a paragraph a human skims. Agents need these spelled out in a structured, consistent format so they can confirm the terms before they buy. If your return window is buried in a PDF, the agent treats that as unknown risk and stops. Clear terms are what let it say yes on the shopper's behalf.
4. Guest and Agent Checkout Enabled
Forcing account creation is the fastest way to break an agent purchase. Guest checkout has to be on, and your Shopify checkout needs to accept a programmatic buyer, not just a person clicking buttons. The agent is completing the order for someone else, so it can't stop to make a login.
5. Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) Support
The Agentic Commerce Protocol is the open standard from OpenAI and Stripe that lets an agent finish a purchase inside the assistant. Shopify already supports agentic checkout through ChatGPT, so stores that meet the data requirements can sell inside the chat instead of waiting for a click to their site. This is the piece most stores don't have set up yet. Get it right and you're selling to buyers who never once land on your homepage.
6. Accurate, Synced Inventory
Inventory has to be right, in real time, across every channel you sell on. An agent that completes a sale on an item you don't have creates a canceled order and a refund, and that's the fastest way to lose trust with the platform routing buyers to you. Sync your stock counts and audit them, because agents don't forgive oversells the way patient humans sometimes do.
7. Trust Signals an Agent Can Read
Reviews, ratings, and merchant credibility can't just sit in a widget that renders after the page loads. They need to be in your structured data so an agent weighing two stores can see you're the safer bet. Google's review markup guidance is a good baseline, and it applies here even though the buyer is a machine.
How We Chose This List
These seven come from what actually breaks when we test agent purchases against live Shopify stores. Each one is a point where an agent either completes the checkout or bails, based on real ACP and ChatGPT commerce behavior, not theory.
FAQ
What is agentic checkout on Shopify?
It's when an AI agent browses your store, adds a product, and completes payment for a shopper. It works only when your product data, pricing, availability, and policies are structured so a machine can read them without guessing.
What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)?
It's an open standard from OpenAI and Stripe that lets AI agents complete purchases directly inside the assistant. Shopify supports agentic checkout through ChatGPT, so stores that meet the data requirements can sell inside the chat.
Do I need to change my Shopify theme for agentic checkout?
No. Agentic checkout depends on your data layer, not your theme. Clean feeds, accurate inventory, structured pricing, and readable policies matter far more than how your storefront looks.
How do AI agents find my products?
They read structured product data through Schema.org Product markup and your product feed. If your titles, prices, and availability are inconsistent, the agent picks a competitor it can read cleanly.
