An llms.txt file is a plain-text map you leave for AI crawlers, pointing them at what matters and telling them what you sell. It's early, it's low-cost, and most stores don't have one.

Here are 6 things your Shopify llms.txt should say.

1. What your store actually sells

Open with a plain, one-line description of your catalog. "WRKNG sells merino base layers and technical outerwear for cold-weather sport." No slogans. A model reads this to place you fast.

2. Links to your key category pages

Point crawlers straight at your main collections. Don't make them discover your structure; hand it to them. The easier you are to map, the more completely you get read.

3. Where your product data lives

Reference your structured data and feed so crawlers know the facts are machine-readable, not just in prose. Pair this with valid Product schema on the pages themselves.

4. Your most authoritative content

Link the guides and answer pages that establish your expertise. These are what a model cites when it explains a choice. Surface your best, not your newest.

5. What makes you different in plain terms

State your real differentiator as a fact, not a tagline. "Free returns for 90 days" or "made from certified recycled wool" gives a model something checkable to repeat.

6. How you want to be described

Give the model the language you'd want in an answer. If you're the affordable option or the premium one, say so plainly. This is the description that shows up when a buyer asks about you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an llms.txt file for a Shopify store?

It's a plain-text file that acts as a map for AI crawlers, telling them what you sell, where your key pages and data live, and how you want to be described. It's an early, low-cost signal most stores don't yet use.

Does llms.txt replace product schema?

No. llms.txt guides crawlers to your important pages and states your positioning, but the facts still need valid Product schema on the pages themselves. Use them together: llms.txt for orientation, schema for machine-readable facts.

What should a Shopify llms.txt include?

A plain description of what you sell, links to key category pages, a pointer to where your structured data lives, your most authoritative content, your real differentiator stated as a fact, and the language you want a model to use when describing you.
