Which Klaviyo email flows does a Shopify DTC brand actually need?
The six Klaviyo flows every Shopify DTC brand needs in 2026 are welcome, abandoned checkout, browse abandonment, post-purchase, winback, and review-request. Set up right, automated flows drive around 30% of total Klaviyo revenue while making up a tiny share of sends, according to Klaviyo's own benchmark data.
I built a clothing brand to $10 million a year before I sold it. Flows were the quietest, highest-margin revenue we had. Here's the six that matter, and what each one should return.
1. Welcome / First-Purchase Flow
This is the sequence that fires when someone joins your list, usually off a popup offer. It sets the tone and converts new subscribers while intent is highest. Welcome series average some of the strongest engagement in email, with Klaviyo reporting placed-order rates on flow emails far above any campaign blast.
How to build it
Three to five emails. Deliver the promised discount in email one, tell the brand story in email two, and stack social proof before the offer expires. Simple beats clever here.
2. Abandoned Checkout Flow
This one triggers when a shopper starts checkout and bails before paying. It's the single highest-ROI flow most stores run because these people already pulled out a card. Recovery emails routinely bring back 5% to 11% of abandoned carts, per Klaviyo's abandoned cart research.
How to build it
First email inside one hour. Second at 24 hours. Save the discount for the third email so you don't train people to abandon on purpose.
3. Browse Abandonment Flow
This fires when someone views a product but never adds it to cart. It catches interest earlier than the checkout flow, so it reaches a much bigger pool of shoppers. Browse flows convert lower per email but scale wide, and Shopify notes they recover sales you'd otherwise never see.
How to build it
One or two emails, no discount up front. Show the exact product they looked at and one or two related items. Keep it light. These people are still shopping, not deciding.
4. Post-Purchase / Thank-You Flow
This sequence starts the moment an order is placed. It sets delivery expectations, cuts support tickets, and turns a one-time buyer into a repeat one. Repeat customers spend more over time, and Klaviyo's retention data shows a second purchase sharply raises lifetime value.
How to build it
Email one confirms the order and thanks them like a human. Later emails share how to use the product, then tee up a relevant second purchase. Don't sell hard in the first message.
5. Winback / Lapsed-Customer Flow
This targets buyers who haven't ordered in a set window, usually 60 to 120 days depending on your product cycle. Winning back an existing customer costs far less than buying a new one. Acquiring a new customer can run five times the cost of keeping one, according to Harvard Business Review.
How to build it
Lead with "we miss you," then escalate to an incentive if they stay quiet. Cap it at three emails. If they don't come back, suppress them so you protect your sender reputation.
6. Review-Request Flow
This sends after an order is delivered and asks for a review or photo. Reviews feed conversion on every future visitor and now feed AI shopping answers too. Product pages with reviews convert better, and displayed reviews can lift conversion by double digits, per Klaviyo.
How to build it
Time the ask to land a few days after delivery, not after purchase. Sync it to your delivery data so you're asking people who've actually used the thing. One reminder is plenty.

FAQ
Q: How much revenue should Klaviyo flows drive for a Shopify store?
Well-built flows commonly drive around 30% of total email revenue while being a small fraction of sends, based on Klaviyo's benchmark data. If yours are under 20%, your automations are leaking money.
Q: Which flow should I build first?
Abandoned checkout, every time. It has the highest intent and the fastest payback, recovering 5% to 11% of lost carts.
Q: How many emails should each flow have?
Most flows work best at two to four emails. Welcome and abandoned checkout can carry three to five. More than that and open rates drop while unsubscribes climb.
Q: Do I need a discount in every flow?
No. Save discounts for abandoned checkout and winback, and only after the first email. Welcome, browse, post-purchase, and review flows work fine on value alone.
Q: Do these flows help with AI shopping visibility?
Yes, indirectly. Review-request flows generate the ratings and photos that AI assistants pull when they recommend products, so more reviews means more chances to get cited.
