ChatGPT skips most Shopify products for six reasons: thin product data, missing structured data, no outside mentions, stale feeds, blocked crawlers, and reviews it can't read. Fix those six and you go from invisible to eligible. Here's the full breakdown.
I've run this exact check on 40+ stores this year. The pattern barely changes.
1. Why won't ChatGPT recommend my products?
Usually because your product data is too thin. A title, a price, and three bullet points don't give an AI enough to match against a shopper's question. Fill out material, dimensions, use case, and who the product is for. Shopify's product feed spec lists every field that carries weight.
2. Do I need structured data for ChatGPT Shopping?
Yes. Without Product and Offer schema, ChatGPT has to guess what your page even is. Add Product schema with price, availability, and review markup on every product page. That's the single highest-impact fix on this list. Most themes don't include it by default.
3. Why does ChatGPT recommend competitors instead of me?
Because other sites talk about them and nobody talks about you. AI models weigh third-party mentions heavily. Reddit threads, roundup articles, comparison lists. If your brand name never shows up outside your own domain, you're starting from zero. Get into a few honest "best of" lists in your category.
4. Does ChatGPT use my live product feed?
It leans on fresh data. A feed that hasn't updated in weeks tells the system your store might be dead. Sync inventory and pricing daily. Out-of-stock products that still show as available are a fast way to get filtered out for good.
5. Am I accidentally blocking AI crawlers?
A lot of stores are. Check your robots.txt and any bot-blocking app for rules against OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot. OpenAI documents its crawlers here. Block them and you opt out of ChatGPT Shopping entirely. I've caught this on stores that had no idea a security app was doing it.
6. Where should my product reviews live?
On the product page, in readable HTML, with Review schema. Reviews trapped inside a JavaScript widget that loads after the page often don't get read. Social proof is one of the strongest trust signals an AI has. Make sure it's on the page, not hidden behind a script.
How We Chose This List
These six come from live AEO audits across Shopify stores in apparel, supplements, and home goods. We ranked them by how often each one was the actual blocker, not by how technical they sound.
FAQ
Q: How long until ChatGPT picks up my fixes?
Usually two to six weeks, depending on how often the crawlers revisit your site and refresh their index.
Q: Do I need a special app to appear in ChatGPT Shopping?
No. You need clean product data, structured data, and open crawlers. Apps can help add schema, but none of them guarantee placement.
Q: Does paid advertising get me into ChatGPT results?
Not the organic recommendations. Those are earned through data quality and outside mentions, not ad spend.
