Six feed fields decide whether AI recommends your Shopify products: title, description, price and availability, GTIN and brand, category, and attributes. Get these right and AI can read, match, and recommend you. Get them wrong and you're invisible.
Most stores treat the product feed as a Google Shopping formality. It's now the raw material every AI shopping assistant reads. These six fields do the heavy lifting.
1. Product title
The title is the first thing a model reads. "Blue Shirt" tells it nothing. "Men's Merino Wool Base Layer, Navy, Slim Fit" tells it everything. Front-load the specifics that match how people search.
2. Description
The description is where matching happens. AI compares shopper intent to your text. Write what the product is, who it fits, and what problem it solves. Empty or generic descriptions drop you out of comparison queries entirely.
3. Price and availability
These two are non-negotiable. Google's product data specification treats price and availability as required, and AI assistants follow the same logic. A model won't recommend a product it can't price or confirm is in stock.
4. GTIN and brand
Identifiers connect your product to the same item across the web. A GTIN plus brand lets a model verify your product against reviews, specs, and prices everywhere else. Without them, your listing floats alone with no context.
5. Product category
Category tells the model which comparison set you belong in. Miscategorize and you compete against the wrong products, or none. Use the Google product taxonomy and pick the most specific node that fits.
6. Attributes: size, color, material
Attributes power the filtered queries that convert. "Waterproof, size 11, wide." When a shopper asks an assistant for something specific, your attributes are what get you matched. Fill every one that applies. Blank attributes lose specific queries.
How We Chose This List
We ranked these six by how strongly each field influenced whether products appeared in AI shopping comparisons across live Shopify feeds. Title, description, and price/availability drove the biggest swings. Attributes decided the long-tail, high-intent queries.
FAQ
Where does my Shopify product feed come from?
Shopify generates feeds through sales channels and apps like the Google & YouTube channel. Those feeds flow to shopping surfaces, including AI ones.
Which field matters most?
Price and availability are the hard gate. After that, title and description drive the most matches.
Do I need GTINs for handmade or custom products?
If no GTIN exists, use brand plus MPN and rich attributes. Identifiers help, but strong descriptions and attributes can carry unique products.
How often should I update my feed?
Price and stock should sync in near real time. Descriptions and attributes you refine as you learn which queries you're missing.
