The biggest local AEO mistakes are an unclaimed Google Business Profile, inconsistent NAP across directories, ignored reviews, missing LocalBusiness schema, one generic page instead of real location and service pages, and no answer-first content. Fix those six and you stop being invisible when people ask an AI assistant who to call.
I built and sold a brand that did $10 million a year. I've watched how buyers find businesses change completely. People used to scroll a page of Google results. Now they ask an assistant one question and get one answer.
The businesses that get skipped almost always make the same handful of errors. None of them are hard to fix. Most owners just don't know they're bleeding out. Here they are.
What is the number one local AEO mistake?
The number one mistake is an incomplete or unclaimed Google Business Profile. AI assistants lean on the same local data Google trusts, so a half-filled profile reads like a business that barely exists. Claim it, verify it, and fill in every field: categories, hours, service area, photos, and services. That one move does more than most of the fancy stuff people chase. Start with Google's Business Profile setup docs.
2. Inconsistent NAP across directories
Your name, address, and phone number showing up three different ways across the web is a trust killer. When your Yelp listing says one suite number and your website says another, AI can't tell which one is real, so it moves on to a competitor it's sure about. Pick one exact format and make it identical everywhere, down to the "St." versus "Street." Then clean up the old listings you forgot about. Those are usually the ones with the wrong number.
3. Ignoring reviews or having few recent ones
Reviews are proof you still exist and still do good work. A business with twelve reviews from two years ago looks dead next to one getting fresh ones every week, and AI reads that gap the same way a customer would. Ask every happy customer for a review, reply to the ones you get, and keep them coming. Recent beats perfect.
4. No LocalBusiness structured data
Structured data is how you hand AI your facts in a language it reads without guessing. Most local sites have none, which means the machine has to scrape your address off a footer and hope it's right. Add LocalBusiness schema to your site with your name, address, phone, hours, and service area. It confirms everything, and it doesn't depend on any one platform staying accurate.
5. One generic page instead of location and service pages
A single "Services" page that lists everything you do in three towns tells AI nothing specific. When someone asks for drain cleaning in a named city, the assistant wants a page about drain cleaning in that city, not a catch-all. Build a real page for each core service and each area you serve, with the problem, the fix, and the location named in the copy. Google's local business guidance backs this up.
6. No answer-first content for the questions people actually ask
People ask AI full questions. "How much does it cost to fix a water heater?" "Do you need a permit for a new furnace?" If your site never answers those in plain language, you don't get quoted. Write the question as a heading and put the direct answer in the first sentence under it. That's the sentence AI quotes. Everything else is support. Moz's local SEO guide covers the fundamentals that feed this.
How We Chose This List
These are the six issues we see most when we audit local service businesses that get skipped by AI assistants. They're ranked by how fast fixing them moves the needle, data fixes first, content last.
FAQ
What is local AEO?
Local AEO is answer engine optimization for a business that serves a specific area. It gets you named when someone asks an AI assistant for a plumber, dentist, or roofer near them.
Does a Google Business Profile still matter for AI search?
Yes. AI assistants pull from the same local data Google uses. A complete, claimed profile with accurate hours and categories is one of the strongest signals you have.
How long does local AEO take to work?
Fixing your profile and NAP can show up fast. Reviews and content build over weeks and months. Start with the data fixes because they're the fastest wins.
Do I need structured data if my Google profile is already complete?
Yes. LocalBusiness schema on your own site confirms your details in a format AI reads directly, and it doesn't depend on any one platform staying accurate.
