The six most common llms.txt mistakes Shopify stores make are skipping it entirely, treating it like robots.txt, linking to weak pages, dropping the descriptions, letting it go stale, and expecting it to carry the whole AI visibility job. Here's each mistake and the fix.
The llms.txt file is a simple markdown file at your root that points AI models to your best content. It's easy to get wrong in ways that waste the whole effort. Let's fix that.
1. Not having an llms.txt at all
You can't get the benefit of a map you never drew. The llms.txt spec is a lightweight markdown file that lists your key pages for AI. Most Shopify stores don't have one. Fix: create a basic one this week.
2. Treating it like robots.txt
robots.txt blocks crawlers. llms.txt invites them to your best stuff. They do opposite jobs. Fix: use llms.txt to highlight and describe your strongest pages, not to restrict access.
3. Linking to thin or dead pages
Your llms.txt is only as good as what it points to. Link a thin category page and you've shown AI your weakest work. Fix: point to your deepest guides, best product pages, and richest FAQs.
4. No descriptions on the links
A bare URL tells a model nothing about why the page matters. The spec supports a short description per link. Fix: add one plain sentence per link explaining what it covers. Context helps the model choose.
5. Letting it go stale
A file listing last year's pages misleads more than it helps. Fix: refresh it when you publish major content or restructure. A quarterly review is enough for most stores.
6. Expecting it to do the whole job
llms.txt is a signpost, not the destination. It won't rescue thin content or broken schema. Fix: treat it as one layer on top of clean product data, structured data, and real content. It amplifies good work. It can't replace it.
How We Chose This List
We ranked these six by how often each mistake showed up on Shopify stores that had attempted an llms.txt, and how much each one blunted the file's value. Not having one at all was the most common. Expecting too much from it was the most disappointing.
FAQ
Is llms.txt an official standard?
It's a community proposal that's gained real traction. Adoption by AI models is still uneven, so treat it as a low-cost bet, not a guarantee.
Where does llms.txt go on a Shopify store?
At your root domain, like yourstore.com/llms.txt. Shopify's file handling can make this fiddly, so verify it serves as plain markdown.
Does llms.txt replace a sitemap?
No. A sitemap lists everything for search crawlers. llms.txt curates your best pages for AI. Keep both.
Will llms.txt get me cited by ChatGPT?
On its own, no. It helps models find your best content, but citations still depend on the quality and structure of that content.
