How do you get your products mentioned in ChatGPT?
You get mentioned by shipping clean structured product data, earning third-party mentions, stacking real reviews, and letting the AI crawlers read your store. ChatGPT cites what it can read and trust. Nothing else. The stores getting named are not louder. They are more readable. Here are the six GEO tactics that do the work.
1. Ship complete structured product data
ChatGPT can only mention what it understands, and structured data is how it understands your product. Add full Product schema to every page with price, availability, brand, GTIN, and review ratings using the Schema.org Product type. On Shopify, most themes ship partial schema, so audit a live product page in a validator and fill the gaps. Empty fields are missed mentions.
2. Earn third-party mentions and roundups
Models trust what other sites say about you more than what you say about yourself. Get your product into "best of" roundups, gift guides, and niche review blogs that already rank. Pitch editors a real angle and a product they can test, not a press release. One placement in a trusted roundup does more for AI visibility than ten pages on your own domain.
3. Grow review volume and mark it up
Reviews are proof, and AI leans on proof when it picks a product to name. Collect more reviews, then expose them with AggregateRating markup so the rating and count are machine-readable. Set up a post-purchase email that asks for a review a week after delivery, and keep the ratings visible on the page itself. A product with 400 reviews and a 4.7 average gets named. A product with none gets skipped.
4. Write comparison-friendly content
ChatGPT loves to answer "which is better" questions, and it needs clear content to do it. Publish honest comparison pages and spec tables that line your product up against the alternatives. Use plain column headers like price, material, and best use case so the model can read the table at a glance. Give it a clean answer it can quote, and your product shows up inside the comparison.
5. Let the AI crawlers in
None of this matters if the crawler can not read your store. Allow OpenAI's crawlers in your robots.txt so ChatGPT can fetch and cite your pages live, following OpenAI's bots documentation. Check your robots.txt for a blanket disallow, since a lot of stores block bots by accident. Blocking OAI-SearchBot means blocking every live mention.
6. Name your brand and entities precisely
AI connects your product to your brand through consistent naming, so pick one name and use it everywhere. Match your brand name across your site, Google's product structured data, your reviews, and every third-party mention. Write out the full product name the same way each time instead of shortening it on some pages. Sloppy naming splits your authority. Precise naming stacks it.
How we chose this list
These six tactics come from watching what ChatGPT actually cites when people ask it for products, and from testing schema and crawler changes on live Shopify stores. We kept the moves that changed real mentions and cut the ones that only looked good on a checklist. Each one maps to how the model reads, trusts, and names a product.
FAQ
Q: How does ChatGPT decide which products to mention?
It pulls from training data and live web results through its search tools. It mentions products with clean structured data, trusted third-party citations, and real reviews. Clear machine-readable pages beat vague ones every time, so the fix is almost always making your pages easier to read, not writing more copy.
Q: What is GEO and how is it different from SEO?
GEO is generative engine optimization. It gets your products cited inside AI answers instead of ranked on a page of links. Same fundamentals as SEO, but the goal is the mention, not the click. The buyer often never sees your homepage, so the mention has to carry the sale.
Q: Do I need to let OpenAI crawl my Shopify store?
Yes. If you block OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, ChatGPT can not read your pages to cite them live. Allow the crawler so your data is there when someone asks.
Q: How long does GEO take to work?
Live web citations can show up within days once crawlers can read your pages. Training-data mentions take longer because models update on a schedule. Third-party mentions and reviews move the needle fastest, so start there.
Most stores are doing none of this yet, which is exactly why the window is open right now. Get the six tactics running and you show up while your competitors are still guessing.
