ChatGPT is one door. There are at least five more, and most Shopify merchants have never checked a single one of them. The AI shopping platforms beyond ChatGPT that actually send buyers to product pages are Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Amazon Rufus, Pinterest visual search, and Claude and other assistants. Here is how each one surfaces products, and one concrete thing you can do to be eligible.
1. Perplexity
Perplexity answers shopping questions by searching the live web and citing its sources right in the answer. It reads product pages, review roundups, and comparison articles, then names specific products with links. To be eligible, make sure your product pages state the specs, use cases, and price in plain text, because Perplexity quotes what it can read, not what it has to guess. Perplexity also runs a shopping feature that pulls from merchant feeds, documented in its shopping announcement.
2. Google AI Overviews and Gemini
Google AI Overviews sits at the top of search results and summarizes answers, often naming products pulled from Google's index and Shopping data. This is the surface with the most reach, since it rides on regular Google search. The concrete step: keep your products in Google Merchant Center with accurate titles, GTINs, and attributes, because that structured feed is what Google's AI leans on for product answers.
3. Microsoft Copilot
Copilot runs on Bing's index and answers buying questions with product suggestions and links inside Windows, Edge, and Microsoft 365. It reads the open web the same way search does, so anything Bing can crawl, Copilot can cite. Submit and verify your store in Bing Webmaster Tools so your pages are indexed and eligible to appear in Copilot's shopping answers.
4. Amazon Rufus
Rufus is Amazon's built-in shopping assistant, and it only recommends products that live on Amazon. It pulls from your listing title, bullet points, A+ content, and customer reviews to answer questions like "is this good for cold weather." If you sell on Amazon, write your bullets and description to answer real buyer questions in full sentences, because that is the text Rufus reads. Amazon describes how Rufus works in its official Rufus announcement.
5. Pinterest Visual AI Search
Pinterest surfaces products through image-based search and its Lens tool, matching what a user sees to shoppable Pins. It relies on your product images plus the metadata attached to them, not just text. Upload a product catalog and turn on Product Pins so your items become shoppable and eligible to appear in visual results. Clear, well-lit photos with accurate tags do the heavy lifting here.
6. Claude and Other Assistants
Claude and similar general assistants answer product questions from what they can read on the web and, increasingly, through connected tools and agents. They favor pages with clear structure, specs, and honest reviews over marketing fluff. The concrete step is the same one that helps everywhere: write product pages that state the facts a buyer needs, in plain language a machine can parse. That single habit makes you eligible across nearly every assistant at once.
How We Chose This List
We included the AI surfaces that actually recommend products to real shoppers today, based on each platform's own documentation and shipped features. We left out tools that only summarize content without pointing buyers toward products.
FAQ
Q: Do I have to do something different for each AI platform?
Mostly no. Clean structured product data, clear specs, and real reviews feed almost every surface on this list. Amazon Rufus is the one exception, since it only reads your Amazon listing.
Q: Which platform matters most for a Shopify store?
Google AI Overviews reaches the most people because it sits on top of normal Google search. Perplexity and Copilot matter most for shoppers doing deep research before they buy.
Q: How do these AI tools decide which products to recommend?
They read text and data on the open web: product pages, specs, reviews, and articles. Products with clear, structured information get surfaced. Thin pages get skipped.
Q: Can I pay to show up in AI answers?
Not directly in most organic AI answers yet. These picks come from web content and structured data, not ad spend, though a few platforms are testing sponsored placements.
