Every Shopify product page needs five structured data types for AI search: Product, Offer, AggregateRating with Review, BreadcrumbList, and FAQPage. Together they tell AI what you sell, what it costs, whether it's trusted, where it sits, and what buyers ask. Here's each one and why it counts.
Structured data is the machine-readable version of your page. AI models read it first because it's fast and unambiguous. Miss these five and you're making the model work harder than your competitors.
1. Product schema
This is the core. Product schema names the item, its brand, and its identifiers. Without it, an AI model has to infer what your page is even about. Everything else builds on this block.
2. Offer schema
Offer lives inside Product and carries price, currency, and availability. It's what turns "a product" into "a product I can recommend right now for $X." Google's product structured data docs treat the offer as essential. So do shopping assistants.
3. AggregateRating and Review schema
Ratings are a trust signal AI reads directly. Real reviews with an aggregate score tell a model your product has been bought and judged. The rule is simple. It has to be real and on the page. Fake ratings earn manual actions, not recommendations.
4. BreadcrumbList schema
Breadcrumbs show where a product sits in your catalog. Home, category, subcategory, product. That hierarchy helps AI understand context and place your item in the right comparison set. Small block, real payoff for categorization.
5. FAQPage schema
Product-level FAQs are pure citation bait. Sizing, materials, shipping, compatibility. Wrap those Q&As in FAQPage schema and you hand AI clean, quotable answers. This is the easiest citation win most stores skip.
How We Chose This List
We ranked these five by how much each type improved AI readability and citation odds across live Shopify product pages. Product and Offer are the non-negotiable base. Rating, breadcrumb, and FAQ each add a distinct signal AI uses.
FAQ
Does Shopify add all five automatically?
No. Most themes add partial Product schema at best. Offer, review, breadcrumb, and FAQ usually need apps or custom work. Always verify in the page source.
How do I add FAQ schema to a product page?
Add a Q&A section to the page and wrap it in FAQPage JSON-LD, or use an app that generates it from your content. Keep the visible text and schema in sync.
Will too many schema types hurt me?
No, as long as each is accurate and there are no duplicates. Duplicate blocks of the same type are the problem, not variety.
How do I test all five?
Run the product URL through Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator. They flag missing fields and parse errors fast.
