The five AI shopping assistants your Shopify customers already use in 2026 are ChatGPT Shopping, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Rufus, and the Shop app AI. Each one surfaces products from your data, not your design. The store with the cleanest catalog wins the placement. Here's how each assistant works and exactly what you have to do to show up in it.
1. ChatGPT Shopping
ChatGPT is the biggest one, with hundreds of millions of weekly users asking it what to buy. It surfaces products inside the chat, compares them, and now completes the purchase through Instant Checkout without sending the shopper anywhere. OpenAI already connected Shopify catalogs to this flow, which you can see in the Buy it in ChatGPT announcement.
What a merchant must do
Connect your Shopify catalog to ChatGPT and turn on instant checkout. Fill every product field so the model has real data to read. Half-empty products get skipped.
2. Google AI Overviews and Gemini
Google still owns the most search traffic, and AI Overviews now sit on top of billions of queries. It pulls products straight from your Google Merchant Center feed into the AI answer, and Gemini does the same inside its own app. Google explains the shopping side of this in its Google Shopping blog.
What a merchant must do
Sync your Shopify products to Google Merchant Center and keep the feed clean. Match your titles, prices, and availability to what's live on your store. A stale feed gets dropped from the answer.
3. Perplexity Shopping
Perplexity built shopping directly into its answer engine, with product cards and a buy button attached to its cited answers. It leans hard on structured data and reviews to decide which products it recommends. Perplexity walks through its shopping features in its Shop Like a Pro post.
What a merchant must do
Ship valid Schema.org Product markup with price, offers, and availability on every page. Make sure your product pages load without a wall of JavaScript. Perplexity reads the page, so the page has to be readable.
4. Amazon Rufus
Rufus is Amazon's built-in shopping assistant, and it answers buying questions for the millions of shoppers who start on Amazon. It surfaces products from Amazon's own catalog based on listing detail, reviews, and Q&A content. Amazon describes how it works in its Rufus overview.
What a merchant must do
If you sell on Amazon alongside Shopify, treat your listings like data, not marketing. Complete bullet points, full specs, and answered customer questions are what Rufus pulls from. This is the one assistant your own site can't feed directly.
5. Shop App AI and Shopify Copilot
The Shop app is Shopify's own storefront, and its AI recommends products to shoppers already browsing there. On the merchant side, Shopify's Copilot and Magic tools help you write and structure product content that feeds those recommendations. You can see the toolset in Shopify Magic.
What a merchant must do
List your store on the Shop app and complete your product catalog inside it. Use Shopify's AI tools to fill gaps in descriptions and tags. The cleaner your catalog, the more the Shop AI puts you in front of buyers.
How We Chose This List
We ranked these five by how many real Shopify shoppers actually touch them and by whether they can surface or sell your products today, not someday. Each one is live in 2026 and already moving buying behavior. This comes from auditing live Shopify stores and watching where their AI traffic and sales show up.
FAQ
Q: Which AI shopping assistants do Shopify customers use most in 2026?
The five most used are ChatGPT Shopping, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Rufus, and the Shop app AI. ChatGPT and Google reach the widest audience because of raw user counts.
Q: How do I get my Shopify products to show up in AI shopping assistants?
Fill in every product field, ship valid Schema.org Product markup with price and availability, keep inventory accurate in real time, and let AI crawlers reach your product pages. Clean data is what gets you surfaced.
Q: Is ChatGPT Shopping the same as Google Shopping?
No. ChatGPT surfaces products inside a chat and can complete the purchase without leaving the conversation. Google pulls products into AI Overviews from its Merchant Center feed and sends shoppers to a listing or store.
Q: Do I need to pay to appear in AI shopping assistants?
Mostly no. These assistants pull from organic product data, structured markup, and merchant feeds, not ad spend. The stores with the cleanest, most complete catalogs win the placement.
Q: Does Shopify help my store appear in these AI assistants?
Yes. Shopify already connects catalogs to ChatGPT Instant Checkout and Google, and the Shop app runs its own AI recommendations. But it only works if your underlying product data is complete and accurate.
