After the 2026 Shopify release, the 10 settings to review for AI visibility are your product structured data, feed sync, Shop channel catalog, markets, robots.txt crawler access, image alt text, canonical URLs, reviews schema, sitemap freshness, and policies pages. Get these right and AI shopping assistants can read your products, trust the data, and recommend them.
I ran a $10M/year store for 15 years. Data does not lie. When the data an assistant reads is broken, you disappear. Here is the checklist.
1. Product Structured Data and Metafields
Check that every product outputs valid Product schema with price, availability, and GTIN. AI assistants read this to answer "is it in stock" and "what does it cost" without loading your page. Fix it by validating a few product URLs in the schema.org validator and filling missing metafields in bulk.
2. Product Feed Sync to the Shop Channel
Confirm your products are actually syncing and not sitting in an error state. One failed sync can pull your whole catalog out of the data AI tools trust most. Fix it in Shopify admin under the sales channel, and clear any rejected items flagged for missing attributes. Check the sync status weekly, because it fails silently.
3. Shop Channel and Catalog Settings
Review which products are published to the Shop channel and which are hidden. Assistants that lean on Shopify's own catalog only see what you publish there. Fix it by publishing your full active catalog and checking product status per the Shopify Shop channel setup docs.
4. Markets and Product Availability
Check that your target countries have products marked available with correct currency and pricing. If a market is off, assistants read your product as unavailable for that shopper and drop it. Fix it under Settings then Markets, and confirm availability per region.
5. Robots.txt and AI Crawler Access
Look at whether you are blocking AI crawlers like OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended. Block them and you remove yourself from the answers those assistants hand to shoppers. Fix it by editing your robots.txt.liquid using the Shopify robots.txt guide so shopping bots are allowed.
6. Image Alt Text
Review alt text on product and variant images. Assistants use alt text to understand color, material, and product type when the image alone is not enough. Fix it by writing plain, specific alt text like "navy merino wool crewneck sweater" instead of a file name. Do it for your top sellers first.
7. Canonical and URL Settings
Check that variant and collection URLs point to one canonical product page. Duplicate URLs split trust and confuse which page an assistant should cite. Fix it by confirming Shopify's canonical tags are intact and avoiding custom apps that spawn duplicate paths. One clean URL per product. That is the goal.
8. Reviews App Schema
Confirm your reviews app outputs valid AggregateRating and Review schema on the product page. Ratings are one of the strongest signals an assistant uses to pick between two similar products. Fix it by enabling rich snippet output in your reviews app and testing the markup in the validator.
9. Sitemap Freshness
Check that /sitemap.xml lists your current products and updates when you add or drop items. A stale sitemap points crawlers at dead pages and hides new arrivals. Fix it by confirming the sitemap loads, then submitting it in Google Search Console so it gets recrawled.
10. Policies Pages
Review your shipping, returns, and refund pages for clear, current terms. Assistants quote these when a shopper asks "can I return it" before they buy. Fix it by writing policies in plain language under Settings then Policies, with real timeframes and no vague wording.
How We Chose This List
These 10 settings are the ones that decide whether an AI assistant can read your data, trust it, and repeat it to a shopper. We ordered them by how often a broken setting quietly kills visibility across live Shopify stores.
FAQ
How often should I run a Shopify AI visibility audit?
Run the full checklist once a quarter and after every major Shopify release. Check feed sync and sitemap monthly. Those two break quietly.
Do AI shopping assistants use my Shopify structured data?
Yes. They read Product schema for price, availability, and reviews. Missing or wrong data means they skip you or quote a stale price.
Should I block AI bots in my robots.txt?
Not if you want to be recommended. Blocking crawlers like OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot removes you from the answers those assistants give shoppers.
What is the single most important setting for AI visibility?
Accurate feed sync to the Shop channel. It is the cleanest data source most assistants pull, and one failed sync can hide your whole catalog.
