The ten Shopify product feed mistakes that make you invisible to AI are missing GTIN/MPN, thin titles, no brand, stale availability, missing structured data, generic descriptions, bad images, inconsistent pricing, wrong category, and no attributes. Fix these and your products start showing up when ChatGPT or Gemini recommends what to buy. Here's the full list.
1. Missing GTIN and MPN
Your GTIN is the barcode number. Your MPN is the manufacturer's part number. Without them, AI can't match your product to the same product sold anywhere else, so it skips you. Fix: add the GTIN and MPN fields in Shopify's product metafields, and submit them in your Google Merchant Center feed.
2. Thin Product Titles
"Blue Shirt" tells an AI nothing. A title should carry the brand, product type, color, size, and material, because that's the exact language people type into an AI shopping prompt. Fix: rewrite titles as "Patagonia Men's Blue Organic Cotton T-Shirt, Large."
3. No Brand Field
AI assistants weight the brand field heavily when they decide which product answers a query. Leave it blank and you lose every "best [brand] for X" recommendation. Fix: populate the brand attribute on every product, even your own private-label items.
4. Stale Availability
If your feed says "in stock" and the item is sold out, AI learns to distrust your data and stops citing you. This is the fastest way to get quietly dropped. Fix: sync availability in real time through Shopify's native Google channel instead of a daily batch upload.
5. Missing Structured Data
Product schema is how a machine reads your page without guessing. No Product structured data means the AI has to scrape raw HTML, and it usually gets it wrong. Fix: add Product JSON-LD with name, price, availability, and review fields to every product template.
6. Generic Descriptions
Copy-pasted manufacturer blurbs read like every other store selling the same thing, so AI has no reason to pick you. Descriptions should answer the questions a buyer actually asks. Fix: write two to three real sentences covering what it is, who it's for, and one specific detail.
7. Bad or Missing Images
AI shopping tools increasingly read the image, not just the text, and a blurry or missing photo gets your product filtered out. Shopify recommends clear, high-resolution shots on a plain background. Fix: use at least one 1000x1000 pixel image per product with the product filling the frame.
8. Inconsistent Pricing
When the price in your feed doesn't match the price on your live page, AI flags the mismatch and demotes the listing. Buyers hate the bait-and-switch, and so do the models. Fix: pull pricing from one source of truth and let the feed update automatically.
9. Wrong Product Category
Put a running shoe in "Apparel" instead of "Footwear" and you won't surface for the right queries. Category is how AI narrows a million products down to the handful it recommends. Fix: map every product to the correct Google product category taxonomy value.
10. No Product Attributes
Size, color, material, gender, age group. These attributes are exactly how an AI filters "waterproof hiking boots for women in size 8." Leave them empty and you're invisible to any specific prompt. Fix: fill out every relevant attribute field, because AI models reward structured, complete data.
How We Chose This List
These are the ten errors we see most often when we audit Shopify feeds for clients and watch which products get cited by AI shopping tools. Each one is pulled from real feed data, not theory.
FAQ
Q: Why don't my Shopify products show up in AI shopping answers?
Usually it's missing identifiers like GTIN, thin titles, or no structured data. AI can't match or trust products it can't read cleanly, so it recommends a competitor with a complete feed instead.
Q: Does Shopify fix my product feed automatically?
No. Shopify gives you the fields, but you have to fill them in. The platform won't write your titles, add your GTINs, or map your categories for you.
Q: What's the single most important feed field for AI visibility?
The product title, closely followed by GTIN. The title is the exact text an AI matches against a buyer's prompt, and the GTIN confirms it's the real product.
Q: How fast does fixing my feed change AI visibility?
Once your feed is clean and re-crawled, you can start showing up within a few weeks. Real-time availability and accurate pricing matter most for staying in the results.
