The product feed fields that decide whether AI recommends your Shopify store are title, description, GTIN, brand, product category, price, availability, images, attributes, and reviews. Get these right and assistants can read, trust, and name your products. Get them wrong and you're invisible to the machine doing the recommending.
Here's what most stores miss. AI doesn't browse your pretty product page. It reads your structured data. These ten fields are what it reads.
1. Product Title
The title is the first thing an assistant matches against a shopper's question. Write it the way a person asks, not the way your brand names it. "Men's waterproof hiking boots, size 11" beats a clever product name every time.
2. Product Description
Descriptions need real detail: materials, use case, fit, and who it's for. Google's Merchant Center guidelines call for descriptions that match what's on your page and avoid promotional fluff. Thin descriptions give AI nothing to quote.
3. GTIN
The GTIN, your universal product barcode, lets AI match your item to the same product across the web. Google reports that listings with correct GTINs can see better performance because the system trusts the match. Missing GTINs make your product an orphan.
4. Brand
The brand field connects your product to a known entity. When a shopper asks for a specific brand, this is the field that gets you included. Leave it blank and you drop out of brand-specific answers.
5. Product Category (google_product_category)
Category tells the system what shelf your product lives on. Use Google's product taxonomy, not a made-up label. The right category keeps you in the right comparison set when AI builds a recommendation.
6. Price
Price has to be accurate and match your live page. Assistants increasingly answer budget questions, like "under $50," and they read this field to do it. A stale price gets you filtered out or, worse, flagged as untrustworthy.
7. Availability
The availability field tells AI whether you can actually fulfill the sale. Out-of-stock items get dropped from recommendations fast. Keep this synced in real time or you'll earn a mention and then lose the sale.
8. Images
High-quality images with correct image_link URLs matter because visual AI shopping is growing. Google requires clear product images on a plain background for Shopping. Broken or low-res images weaken the whole listing.
9. Product Attributes (color, size, material, gender)
Attributes power filtered answers. When a shopper asks for a red wool sweater in large, these fields are what let AI find yours. Fill every attribute that applies to your catalog.
10. Reviews and Ratings
Review and rating data feeds trust. Assistants lean toward products with social proof, and Review or AggregateRating schema makes that proof machine-readable. If you have reviews, expose them in structured data.
How We Chose This List
We based these ten fields on Google Merchant Center product data specifications, Shopify's own feed documentation, and audits of live Shopify stores through our AI readiness tool. The fields are ranked by how often a gap in them kept a product out of AI recommendations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which feed field matters most for AI recommendations?
Title and GTIN do the heavy lifting. The title is matched against the shopper's question, and the GTIN lets AI confirm your product against the same item elsewhere.
Where do I edit my Shopify product feed?
Most fields live in your product data and metafields, then flow to Google Merchant Center. Clean them in Shopify and confirm the feed in Merchant Center.
Do I need GTINs for every product?
For manufactured products with barcodes, yes. Correct GTINs are a trust signal. Custom or handmade items without barcodes are the exception.
