An AI visibility audit for a Shopify store checks ten things: structured data, product schema, FAQ schema, feed completeness, content freshness, entity consistency, AI bot crawl access, canonical tags, image alt text, and whether you actually show up in AI answers. Pass all ten and AI assistants can read, trust, and cite your store. Miss a few and you are invisible to the buyers asking ChatGPT and Gemini what to purchase.
Most Shopify stores fail this audit without knowing it. The theme looks fine, sales come in from Google, and nobody checks whether a machine can read the page. Here is the checklist. Run it top to bottom.
1. Structured Data Is Present on Every Page
AI reads structured data before it reads your copy. Open any page, paste the URL into Google's Rich Results Test, and confirm valid JSON-LD comes back. No schema means the machine is guessing, and guessing gets you left out.
2. Product Schema Is Complete
Every product page needs Product schema with name, price, availability, and reviews filled in. Shopify's default themes ship partial schema, so check that price and availability actually populate per Schema.org Product rules. A product with no price in its schema does not get recommended.
3. FAQ Schema on Key Pages
FAQ schema turns your answers into citable chunks. Add FAQPage JSON-LD to product and collection pages covering sizing, shipping, and returns, following the Google FAQPage documentation. Those answers are the exact thing AI pulls when a shopper asks a question.
4. Product Feed Is Complete
Agentic checkout runs on your feed, not your theme. Confirm every product has a title, description, price, GTIN, and image in your Shopify feed. Gaps in the feed mean AI shopping agents skip the item because they cannot confirm what it is.
5. dateModified and Content Freshness
AI favors fresh. Check that your pages carry an accurate dateModified value and that you actually update content, because stale pages lose citations to newer ones. Refresh product descriptions and guides on a schedule, not once a year.
6. Entity Consistency Across the Web
Your brand name, address, and details have to match everywhere AI looks. Line up your Organization schema with your Google Business Profile, your social pages, and any directory listing. When the facts conflict, AI trusts you less and cites someone else.
7. Crawlability for AI Bots
You cannot be cited by a bot you blocked. Open your robots.txt and confirm you allow GPTBot, Google-Extended, and PerplexityBot, each of which is documented by its own provider, including OpenAI's bot documentation. Blocking them deletes your store from those answers.
8. Canonical Tags Are Correct
Shopify creates duplicate URLs for products in multiple collections, and the wrong canonical splits your authority. Check that each product points to one canonical URL per Google's canonicalization guide. One page, one source of truth, one thing for AI to cite.
9. Image Alt Text Is Descriptive
AI reads alt text to understand what a product looks like and does. Write alt text that describes the product plainly, "navy merino wool crew sweater," not "IMG_4821." Empty or junk alt text means the image tells the machine nothing.
10. Citation Presence in AI Answers
The only score that matters is whether you show up. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity the real questions your buyers ask, like "best wool sweaters under $150," and see if your store appears. If you are not in the answer, something in items 1 through 9 is still broken.
How We Chose This List
These ten points come from auditing live Shopify stores for AI visibility and watching which fixes actually moved citation presence. We cut anything that looked good on a report but changed nothing in the answer. They run in order from the foundation, schema and feeds, up to the proof, showing up in the answer itself.
FAQ
What is an AI visibility audit for a Shopify store?
It is a check of whether AI assistants can crawl your store, read your structured data, and cite your products. It covers schema, feeds, freshness, crawl access, and actual citation presence.
How often should I run an AI visibility audit?
Run the full checklist once a quarter and check citation presence monthly. Prices, stock, and content change fast, and AI answers change with them.
Which structured data matters most for AI visibility?
Product schema matters most, with price, availability, and reviews filled in. FAQ schema and complete Organization data come next.
Do I need to let AI bots crawl my Shopify store?
Yes, if you want to be cited. Blocking GPTBot, Google-Extended, or PerplexityBot in robots.txt removes your store from those answers.
